TDA is very helpful. usually you should use TDA at close ranges becuz you need to react quik at tight spots when someone is killing you crossing over your ship as it takes forever turning your turrets 320 degrees without it. without TDA is usually straightening your shots when you cant handle the speed acceleration turning your guns to parrallel your shots but i strongly recommend to keep TDA alwayz on for better awareness around you. some ppl say without TDA gives you better accuracy for your shots but i dun think i would believe that...

i personally dont use shift, but i guess its so that you can leave TDA on and when you get ready to line up you can slow them guns down

TDA is used to quickly move your turrets in manual mode, like at the beginning of a battle, for AA guns (planes move fast), or if someone moves to the other side of your ship. You'll want your turrets to move slowly to cross the guidelines at the right points for a tight spread, otherwise you'll just get a broad line of shells.
