It was bombed and torped to death by any available US aircraft in the area.

The boat took a lot of hits before she sank. the water tight compartments in thius boat
seemed to work well... compart that to her sistership musashi who was hit by torps before
construction of the watertight compartments were finished (she was being moved to another
yard to complete buildout) and sank rather quickly.

The plan was to beach it so it could not be sunk; and to use the 18" guns to shell the US
landing forces. There was only enough fuel on the boat for a one way trip.

The truth is that by the time this boat was built, it and all other big gun ships were
obsolete. The carrier or actually, air power in general, made them a liability. The Jap's
and the Americans knew this (this is why the us built an insane number of CV/CVL's for the
war) and why the Jap. converteted the 3rd Yamato class BB to a CV. (used for airplane
transport). The British learned it the hard way (Prince of Wales) and the Germans never
really got it. (well didn't get the funding to get it)

wasn't the Yamato doing a suicide attack on it's own to divert the american air-force
from protecting the fleet, so the other japs could shoot the shit out of the american
carriers?

Yea, Operation Ten-Ichi-Go was a waste of ships (1BB, 1CL, 8DD) and ppl, but this
picture is from 1944. It was taken @ Leyte (notice that triple (shielded) 25mm battery
in the middle is not completed - only 2 from 6 pcs in 1945). Bomb (1000 kg) which hit
near turret #1 exploded without [any] damage. Compare that to IJN armour in NF....

I have much more pictures like that - its my long time devotion to IJN history.

They were just dumb . . . They planned to beach it and shell the crap out of the US but
they sent it with no cover other then a I think 9 DD's and 1 CL and the US spotted it and
sent 6 BB's and 2 CVs to intercept it . . . My facts maybe a bit off but I'm close!!!
