the ship experienced lateral movement, when a full broadside was fired.
I will search around later to, hopefully, find a link to provide.

But, please dont just say it doesn't move w/o proof.

I posted this response w/o proof, because of your post, normally i provide links

wow so far i can find no factual info on lateral movement.
but it looks like i will have to change my minset, it appears from most of the forums
i read, that there is NO lateral movement.
i have believed that there was for about 20 yrs now . lol

The guns on a battleship firing will NOT move it sideways. The mass of the ship is
simply too large for such forces to move it. The "wake" at the front of the ship that
you are referring to is just ripples from the guns firing hitting the ship.

Take a look at that if you want a detailed analysis of the movement a full broadside
would produce. That's 1.2 feet per second on ice, sagging well into the water line
where water will be much more viscous than that of when sliding across a thin film of
water will reduce that movement to maybe a millimeter?

I was told by a friends dad who worked in the navy that when those guns are all
fired in a broadside, the ships rudder is turned to its fullest extent in the opposite
direction of said broadside. Even with the rudder at full the ship still slides a great
deal in the water with the force of those trips 16s. Look at the front of the ship in
this picture. You can see how the broadside moves the vessel. Cool huh?

Yes, I have posted that pic before in old forums. Really makes ya think huh? Think of
the damage that thing can dish out. BTW, thats an Iowa class Battleship. Anyways,
it is a little distorted. To those looking, make sure you click on the picture to get the
undistored full size pic.
