boydyma,

Just name the ships you need numbers for and i will see if i have them, saves me
searching all those names as eyes not as good as they used to be.

Aaaahh so there you go. thanks for that theswitcher.
even though it's not about RN shipnames im not overly fussed about it. its part of
this topics discussion and i think it's relevant.
ive always thought that RN shipnames were better. and each nation has a different
way about finding ship names. also note allied navies *supposedly* dont use
another's ship name if it is taken by another nation. IE. HMAS Canberra, sunk during
the Guadalcanal campaign. US renamed a CA USS Canberra in memorium of the late
HMAS Canberra. which is why HMS Shropshire kept its monniker and became HMAS
Shropshire and not the next HMAS Canberra.
so i guess the USN had to find other names for its fleet. as the RN has been around
for centuries longer then the US counterpart. i guess they just beat em all to it by
being there first :P

eze1 i am doing mostly the same except im trying to use HMAS as i am australian.
however like i said earlier, i also like to uswe on occasion fictitious names from a few
of my favourite authors.

BTW there are still a few unresolved pennant numbers. if anyone with any hard
information could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

woot..I named my Sirius HMS BlackPrince and my tiger HMS Blake :D

btw I just noticed this thread...my ship names have been set for a long time. I
decided to use actual ship names for my RN ships :)

IJN names are based roughly as this:-

Battleships = Named after ancient Provinces

Aircraft Carriers = Named after Dragons and Birds

Heavy Cruisers = Named after Mountains

Light Cruisers = Named after Rivers

Destroyers (First class) = Meteorological Names in poetic style

Destroyers (Second class) = Named after Trees, Flowers and Fruits

Torpedo Boats = Named after Birds

Minelayers = Named after Islands, Straits, Channels and (formerly) Birds

I know it is not British but thought you maybe interested

i belive IJN shipnames were more spiritual in nature. i can go and research some
case examples and get back to you all.
for Example.
Asashio was the lead ship of her class of destroyer in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Her name means "Morning High Tide".
Akizuki was the lead ship of her class of destroyer in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Her name means "Autumn Moon".
Hatsuharu was the lead ship of her class of destroyer in the Imperial Japanese
Navy. Her name means "Spring Rains".
Shiratsuyu was the lead ship of her class of destroyer in the Imperial Japanese
Navy. Her name means "Shimmering Dew" (White Dew).

interesting?

Alot of UK ship names seem to be based off heroic names, something that would be used to
describe a hero, just an example. Like, the HMS. Glorious, and the Illustrious, and the
HMS. Renown. All very good names for a ship, Revnge seems a bit odd to me, but it works.
The US's approach with naming there ships after cities and states, seems to be getting run
short, so names are coming back. The Kriegsmarine named alot of theres after great naval
people. Like Admiral hipper, and Bismarck. The IJN, I don't really know.

So all nations have a way to name there ships, UK being one of the most interesting.

Stan. HMS Royal Oak I think has a nice ring to it. Why WOULDNT anyone want to
name their ship that? HMS Ramillies sounds funny to me.

personally I like the name HMAS Tempest
Tempest meaning a violent storm. Has a cool ring to it doesnt it?

I picked the name from a book by the author J.E.Macdonell. HMAS Tempest. I believe
to be a Edin class Light Cruiser.

I think that the royal navy has come up with some of the best warship name list
around. lots of history. got to love it.

While naming my Revenge, i found out that all the Historical Names were taken- except for
the ROYAL OAK. I guess nobody wanted to name their BB after Prien's trophy. :)

Guess what- I did!

Hehehe...
