some time ago I faced the same situation, and people helped me, so I will help you;
When ur in the shipyard, drag your sailors onto the blue circles on your boat, then click the yellow arrow in front of it.
you are then in the "battle chanel" on the sides of the square you start in you see a few "mission" signs, click one, and you wil get training.
If you have trained enough, click on one of the "DD only" , "DD 5vs5" etc. signs on the water, you then join a room, where players gather before battle.
then press TAB or click the "ready" sign in the right corner, and wait untill the battle starts.
In the beginning you wil get shot like a duck, but you still get XP, and you will soon be able to buy a better ship, better guns etc.
(it's also a good advice to download the manual, so you can look somethings you don't know up.)
