  • USS Arizona was sunk by a BB's APC shell not by a bomb!

This might sound strange, but the USS Arizone was not sunk by a AP Bomb, it was sunk by a
14" inch AP shell. I was in a book store one day, looking for a CV book, because I was so
amazed by CV's ( and I SO WANT ONE IN NF!) and I found this Pearl Harbor book, and was
bored so I was looking through the pages and read some of it, and there was this bolded part,
talking about how the USS Arizona sunk, and it said that the USS Arizona was sunk by a AP
shell. It said that when the Japanese was planning the attack, they did not have any Armor-
Piercing Bombs to use, so they took a 14" inch BB's APC shell and glued some fins on it, vuala,
a APC Bomb, and I also heard that it was by chance the bomber dropped the bomb and it went
into the ammo compartment. My teacher says it was a lucky shot too.

PS. But not sure if all this is true, a lot of books can be wrong.

They were converted shells from the Nagato.

In Pearl Harbor the Battleships were lined up in pairs. Japan had origonaly planned
for a mostly torpedo attack but when a Jap spy at Pearl Harbor sent info back on
location and organization of the fleet Japan realised it needed bombs.

Japan did have AP bombs just not enough at that time. To make up for the short
supply in bombs shells from the Nagato were converted and one of those shells was
droped into the crater from a previous bomb and went into the ammo campartment
of the Arizona and that was all she wrote.

Maybe I should had never brought this up, and that's what it said in the World War II book, and
what are you talking about RN poster? Actually don't tell me, I rather let this post rot away...

It's true the Japanese used slightly modified 14" and 15" AP shells with fins as bombs in
this attack.
But this is not a "new" info as it is stated in most sites/books about the attack on pearl
harbour.

Uh... no. The japanese were not using re-tooled royal navy ordnance. They had
their own.

They were noted for buying or obtaining ordnance from other countries and studying
it extensively to improve on or defend against it. So I'm sure it's possible they got a
design or two out of RN ordnance. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
