  • Being able to see damage on ship

I know that since this game is going to be retail soon this most likly will not be enabled till post retail if at all, but I am posting this as a thought/suggestion for later, right now.... As on the old forums this was suggested by another player and I added some, but I am resuggesting it on the new forums as to see what others think of the idea....

Instead of having damage done and only effecting the ship's engine and speed. I think that we ought to have damage done to guns, radar, damage control, aircraft capabilities, engine and any other systems that might determine the out come of the players role in the battle.

Gun systems: The higher the lvl the guns the more hits they may take, after X amount of hits on a particular gun turret that gun turret is out of action. And this being the most important part of the ship, other then the hull, in battle make it hard to knock out guns, yet possible

Radar systems: The higher the lvl the more hits they take to knock out of action, when out of action you lose mini map. Thus making it harder to see where friendly/enemy force are.

Damage control systems: The higher the lvl of support crews (Repairer/Restorer/Engineer) the more hits it take to knock damage control out of action, when knocked out you greatly lose repairing ability.

Aircraft capailities The higher the lvl of the ship the harder it is to knock this out, but as your ship takes on damage it takes longer for you to ready planes for take off, thus reducing you ability to spot enemies somewhat if you have taken on alot of damage... The more damage the longer it takes to ready planes.

Engine, well this is in place already and doesn't need any change.

Along with this have a diagram of your ship looking from three angles, port side at sea lvl, starboard side at sea lvl and the deck of the ship looking directly down as if from an overhead plane. Have the entire ship start of green to indicate no damage. But as each system (guns, radar, engine and so on) takes on damage that particular system starts to turn color as to show how much damage it has taken.

Picture this, your forward guns get hit multiple times and they start turning yellow/red as with the hull, but if the other systems were not hit they are still green and fully operational on the ship diagram. Or if your radar was hit it would turn color but the other systems are still green and operational, if not hit of course.

And to cap this off have a flooding indicator, as your hull takes on damage and holes begin to form water starts to come on in, why not have a little indicator that shows how much water has flooded the ship? Have the ship list towards the bow/stern and starboard/port.

As I said above, this was suggested partly by another player in the old forums.

Any ideas on this?

I see your thought process of getting hit and there goes a gun, but I said to make it hard for guns to be knocked out, yet possible... The programmers can make it to where the hit % on the turrets is small and the hits that it takes to knock out guns are high... And as I said It will most likly not be enabled till post retail if at all, Babs even said that this will probably be in NF3 if TNF decides to take this idea and put it to use. So there is plenty of time for TNF and the game programmers to do what ever they need and test it out.... This is simply a thought for a better game play...

In the limited scope of this game, I do not see how this is possible. That is not to say it is not a good idea, just that it would take the game in a completely different direction.

Lets just look at a possible, and likely, set of circumstances. You are out in your CL and let off a salvo at a target. At the same time another ship blasts you and knocks our your forward turret. You shoot, he shoots, and again you loose anther turret. You have only taken 500-1000 dp in damage. As you get pounded, you deal out less and less damage. All very logical.
My arguement, though, stems on how much experience/credits will you get for doing less damage than would have been possible under the present system. If everyone gets lessened fire-power, the end result would be either a very protracted battle and/or greatly lessened return (XP/$-wise). Except for the guy who hides out and waits to prey on the cripples. We are all crying for more XP and $ as it is. Not that the XP/$ system doesn't need work, but such a course would require a complete reworking of too many of the integral parts to the game.

There are many other arguements that make this idea un-implementable, as it stands at this time. Just leave it in its 'down-and-dirty' state, st least in this respect.

Babs, thanks for letting TNF know 'bout this, and thanks for letting us know what he thinks 'bout it.

kenijaru, I am opened to any ideas... Think they work.

the guns should be repaired by the repair and restore crew. lets say, in 5 min your guns should be fireing again.

FCS: when blown up your acc revision becomes +1 (keep in mind that the DDII aiming fcs has an acc rev of +61)

"patriot1987:Radar systems: The higher the lvl the more hits they take to knock out of action, when out of action you lose mini map. Thus making it harder to see where friendly/enemy force are."
also, the searching range should decrease.

babs, you seem to have a good relationship with Team NF. I was wondering if you could tell us how many actual programmers they have. It seems like their bug fix rate is glacially slow.

I think this would add some addtional realism to the game. How frustrating is it to pound a ship in the rear thinking it would slow it down and see that all damage is really being done evenly through out the ship.

Very interesting idea. TeamNF really liked it and have already looked into it. Unfortunatly it would require a complete game revamp and would be too much work. Maybe something for a NF 3 or so.

babs out!

BUT, it would add more reason to have a knolage of where to hit a ship

I like most of this except for the gun turret thing. I know it's realistic, but imagine some idiot blows out both your turrets, then here comes a sirius with 5x PDRs. Say goodbye to your crew.
