I've been switching back and forward between Q and Tribal, and have come to the conclusion
that the Tribal has almost nothing going for it.

They have almost the same usuable displacement, 1519 for the Q, versus 1547 for the
Tribal. The Q's 53 space turrets can mount the single 6"/50 and 6"/45, the duals up to
4.7"/45, and the triple 4", i.e. all the guns that you'd want to use on the Tribal. The Q
has an extra torp mount, and could even mount the single 7.5"/45, if you had the
displacement to spare.

But you won't have the displacement to spare, because both ships run out of usable
displacement way too soon with a full crew, round about level 24 or so (depending on your
gun load) even with no armour . You can strip off crew to mount armour, but then you're
crippling whatever CL you eventually switch to.

The only theoretical advantage that the Tribal has is that it has space to mount the 5.3"
and 6" duals, except that it can't really, as it has nowhere near enough usable displacement.

Play with the Tribal for a bit, but I suspect that like me, you'll end up going back to
the Q and grinding with it until well into the 30s.

I have my tribal set up with the single 6's/armour wads & it does me just fine. I dont
agree with the popular view that tribals=torp food- sure the tribal turns slow, but
I'm either far away sniping behind a shield of Q's, allowing plenty of warning for
wide-slow torps. If anyone tries to torp me close up, I usually either rush the torps
before they're primed (while unloading another volley of shells), or else just use my
engine to dance around them. When its truly unavoidable, I aim for a torp & let my
bulge take the hit of a single torp. Its only, maybe, 65% of a Q at torp dodging, but
altering the way you play makes up for it.

IMHO, the Q is more of an armoured FF with big teeth. I've never liked it- demands
too much course correction with big guns for me. I wouldnt mind a triple4" shotgun
model, though

If you want to use the 3x4", stay in the Q - small target, turns quicker, better speed.
If you want to use the 6"/45s, stay in the Q, smaller target, turns quicker, better
speed.

If you want to train a support crew, use the Tribal. In other words, use the Q, worry
about the crew when you get your CL.

Tribal = big, fat, easy target.
Q = evil little sod

I use the triple 4"s with plenty of armour. Two or three accurate broadsides will take
care of most any attacker. For good measure, I also carry the Mark VIIx4 launcher to take
care of enemies attempting to broadside me at close range.

I use a mixture of 6' singles and dual 4.5s. Im still trying to come up with the money for decent armor but i would suggest taking the torp launcher ( i use two loads, 8 torps). Just load up on armour until the bloody other dds cant hurt you enough. A few close broadsides and thats the end of them

I just upgrading the to the Tribal yesterday (HMCS Canada) and have yet to use it
because of the unfortunate event of lack of funds

I never really think about how Im going to outfit a ship, I just go with the flow. Stick
an engine, aiming FCS and some guns and Im all set

It has gotten me this far, and I didnt have to put up with the stresses of figuring
out all the math

I loved my tribal with the 6/45Ls and no armour. The 6" guns (Two binds heavy, one bind light) allow you to range damned near every other DD in the game (To be fair, the new DDs were not out when i had my tribal so i had less competition). Having no armour means that you'll take a pounding, but only if the enemy can hit you. If you keep on your toes, you should be able to run away quickly enough to stop anyone from hitting you. TWs will catch up with you eventually, but it doesn't take that much fire to cripple one. If he is chasing and you play it smart, you will be next to impossible to torp. And by keeping at max range using high caliber guns (For a DD, anyway), you are going to maximise your exp gain. You might get a third of the attack you would get with the 3x4" guns and still get the same exp.

This setup also allows you to take on most CLs in the game, or at least do some serious damage to them. Play like a coward, run away from everything, keep at maximum range. You'll get cussed out by quite a few people (especially the 3x4" armour whore Q's. All the belt armour in the world doesn't matter when you hit their deck for 350 a shell), but it is a great way to earn exp.
