As HeroEV said, L2 is probably the most flexible of all the BB5s. The transition from Van to L2 might be a bit tough at first, but it'll be much more familiar after some number of games, depending on how fast you improve.
As there are far too many ways to play L2, and many of them are correct, I will try to suggest tips that will ease you into L2 and 40 degree guns.
0. Make sure you're using the right guns (lvl100).
1. When you first start, as been said, make your guidelines just long enough for the shells to either land right within the edge of the guidelines or outside them, whichever gives you a more comfortable feeling.
2. Try to go a few rounds in missions where you can test fire to see your range and how long it will take.
3. When you're in your first few battles, try to get into line battle positioning and fire. Get a feel for how long it takes for your shells to land, and where on the ship they landed as compared to where you aimed for them to land. For example, you aimed for the shells to land in the middle of the ship, but when the shells actually hit, they hit on the rear. That's the shell hang time you'll have to get used to so you can prepare.
4. Know your angles. As a BB5, you want to stay outside the range of as many ships as possible while hitting as many ships as possible. In short, know your angles between 30-40 very well. Then, know angles between 1-10 well also. Knowing these angles will let you deal with BBs as well as the close combat ships such as SS, DD, and some CL. Once you're familiar with these, know the remaining angles.
5. Get used to where shells will land when you run in or run out.
6. Enjoy L2 and find what play style fits you. The two most adapted styles are 39 knot 3 gun L2 and 35 knot 2 gun armored L2. Both have their benefits and detriments. I would suggest using 39 knot 3 gun L2 setup from levels 103-115. From then on, you can go 2 gun armorwhore. There are a few reasons for this. 1, your gunners will not have spread tight enough to use 2 gun L2 effectively until levels 115+. 2, because your spread will suffer, you'll be getting low damage, so you won't be rewarded as much XP. 3, AW L2 setup can cause a player to play lazy, and therefore stupid; don't be that player.
However, later on, using 2 gun aw or 3 gun sw L2 will work either way. Personally, I use 2 gun aw L2 out of convenience and because it's fun to play something different after the previous 17 levels.
