Your home wireless most likely has less users than a school's wireless connection, hence more available bandwith, hence fewer problems?

Unfortunately, a lot of the time on a wireless connection, there will be interference. This interference slows down the connection and introduces errors. The results vary for some it's lag, some it's extreme lag, and for some it's an inability to even log in.

My suggestion is usually to use a wired connection, if this is not possible try to get as clear of a path to the router as possible.

I hope this helps explain a bit.
