  • The Ultimate Support Ship Setup?

Post ss4 patch combined with the fact now that most of the MN kiddies have lvl'd beyond DD
and CL's has lead to an unfortunate lack of support ships to combat subs, planes, small
enemy boats, but more so subs.

So I present to you the best? Support ship.
Most will think Emerald straight away as I did, the Emerald has a flaw in that it can do 1
role very well ie AA or ASW but lacks in the other so I went with the Edinburgh.

By using the *Edinburgh* I was able to provide Anti Air, Anti Sub, Small ship defence and
Scouting services, the big 4 in support.

R slots, 4x 5.25" RP10A = (i have 118ukaa gunners) Add HHE and AA ammo.
The HHE rips into subs on the surface and any other ships.
The AA is a 1 shot kill against DB's scouts and most fighters.

T slots, 6x Hedgehogs = Use your Main Gunners (or rld ones) for faster reload time.
The Hedgehogs are 3 a side, use gradual fire for range. Rotate ship as required to keep
HH'ing him. Main/rld gunners will cut down on the reload of HH's greatly so by the time
you fire your 6th HH the first is ready.

Support Slots
1x Scout Pilot - (help your team scout the enemy! additional extra is to add mines)
1x Sonar man - The reason your in an edinburgh CL is so sonarman can spot the enemy subs
2x Engineers - Provides engine OH to escape torps and Soft Def against dmg.

Armour setup
0.2 Belt
As much bulge as possible (I run with 40 and OH to 50knots)

Tactics.
1 - Follow your friendly BB, provide scouting service, AA as and when required. Save your
engines
2 - If small ships enter visual range of either yourself or BB engage so long as it is
safe to do so. ( i.e. dont dash out into enemy BB firing range ) Use your HHE, save the HH
if you know subs are around otherwise feel free to facepalm him.

3 - Those damn subs! OK you found the bugger. Some helpful pointers

(A) Stay at around 15 degrees range of your Hedgehogs. If he on the surface pelt his face
with HHE
(B) As soon as he submerges fire 1 or 2 gruadual shots of Hedgehogs on him, if hes smart
he will crash drive - patience and wait.. as soon as he rises fire another round of
Hedgehogs. If he comes back to the surface repeat (A)
(C) If he fires torps at you, race away - with 45-50knots OH you can escape sub torps
explosive range, once you have eluded the shots return to finish the sub.

Experience.
When using this setup, I've never died to a sub and have taken many ss4's to the grave.
Additionally it's perfect for those well aimed scout kills and DB protection. The 5.25"
rp10A guns with HHE are devastating small guns, highly effective against anyone that
enters your range (which is about 15-20 degrees HH range)

Hope this war experience helps any would be support UK ships :)
Fara.
(ps feel free to ask questions)

You use the AA on Edinburgh kinda like a BB at least i do. Just how the turrets are so far
apart on say an H39 you cross your guide lines on the location of the enemy planes.

By in far the main role of the Edinburgh is an Anti-Sub ship first, then AA/Surface.
The Emerald is far too slow fully laden and under protected. The Edinburgh can hold 40 or
so bulge and OH to 52knots with sonarman/scout/aa gunners/HH gunners and engi's. The OH is
vital getting to and escaping from enemy Subs and when they are on you.

The Number of R slots on the Emerald is better so yeah you can load it with HH or AA and
individually its better but as a combined role I totally favour the Edinburgh for its
speed, protection and versitility.

JZUK
4x 5.25"s about half a kilometre apart with craptacular arcs on a boat that is harder to
miss than it is to hit?

I struggle to see why an Emerald which is only 1 set of HH per side down on the Edin while
massively more capable at AA and delivering wads of 5.25" goodies to surfaced subs and
smaller boats (or carriers for that matter) is inferior to this set up...

Skeptical JZUK is reluctant to buy into this suggestion without further evidence.

Yeah i'd have to agree that this sounds a pretty good setup am currently usnig
emmy to AA / ASW / ship support and have found it lacking wen going for surface /
subs. So i'll try aout the Edin at report back,

Looks like a winner though

sounds like a fun set up

Nice setup farazelleth .. I've been using the same ship with similar setup myself for
sometime now.. I've always liked the edin...
I differ slightly... I have little bulge around 5 but a fair bit of belt and some deck... I
have 1 high lvl 120 engineer but this allows me to reach 52 knts on OH and it stays
at that speed for a very long time... lots of vets..:)
I use the same gun setup with my lvl 120 AA gunners and low lvl ( 28) gunners for
the T slots HH's

using this setup the ship is very powerful.. ok AA is not the best but very capable of
shooting down most targets, plus if anything gets close the damage from those
guns using HE and the rate of fire involved blows most things out of the water with
little effort..:)

Mind renaming this guide to "The Ultimate Support Ship Setup?"

Its a nice ship setup for support ship. I do pretty much the same with my MN line that I am
grinding, but with the Trip 6.1".

thxs for sticky Noricer :)

@ Jimmy - UK was never going to be awesome at AA, and its True the R turrets dont 360 but
they move fast enough with nimble fingers with the Q and E controls.

To solve the problem on Gun displacement (ie forward / rear turrets so far apart) My
engagement range is where the shots cross each other at maximum range. So I aim my R
turrets to X each other at 36 degrees (golden angle). With practice you can aa planes at
lower altitudes and still have all shots X where the planes are ... kinda like being in a
H39/44 but instead of X'ing the enemy BB ur just doing it to the planes.

The AA is really just for oppertunity scout & bomber kills, ship isnt a dedicated AA boat.

In response to its ability to ASW. The 6 Hedgehogs i've found more than capable of killing
subs. But and here's the catch u gotta be spot on, its why i swap from Maximum velocity in
AA mode to gradual with T slots and HH.
Once u've found range and planted 1 wave of HH directly on a sub hes going to crash
drive. If he comes to surface - pelt him with HHE from the R turrets. The longer he crash
dives the more self inflicted damage he does to himself. Rinse and repeat.

This isnt the fastest kill but you will supress the Sub so that he is both helpless and
unable to escape :)

lol..i sometimes use that aa gun..i kills scouts with one shot..with my lvl 62 accu gunners..

I think that fails at AA, because the R forward and backwards slots are far from each other, that makes
hard to hit anything thats close to you.

Also u cant turn 360 degrees the weapons, that makes a way hard to follow aircraft flying over you.
(In the emerald, whenever u need to follow quickly a plane, u just follow it with the front guns)

At ASW, 3 per side isnt enought with ss4-900sd =/ i have discovered myself doing 20k damage to a SS
and it wasn't enought to bring it to the surfrace.
