1xSonarman
1xPlanesman
2xTorpers
1x Engineer
and maybe 1x Gunner to scare off the FFs and DDs

Lord Kelvin is right.

One single turret can do more than you think, last night i was killing a Lvl 60 km bb ,
only with deck gun, "IJN SS4 deck gun" single turret, and the results were pretty
impressive, took half of his life, due that next to me, was the flag ship, but yeah, if
you know how to use it, it canhelps or make a difference against a DD or any other
ASW ship.

I personally think, gunners on SS4 are optional and acceptable, but below ss4, its
no good.

"I'm not for OP'ing the SS as I believe the SS4 subs are already powerful as it but if
they do release SS5s then I wouldn't mind seeing the deck guns being operated
without a gunner. "

Yeah because submarines need more buffs. They are already OP, how would it be
fair for them to have another support on board exactly? Oh wait fair, balanced, what
am I talking about, never mind.

Bitter much? It was a suggestion. Relax. Breathe.

I STATED I thought subs were already powerful enough but if SDE insists on putting
out SS5s or PSS then I DON'T WANT to see them buff their speeds, their torp
damage, their DP, their tube quantity, etc etc. That seems to be the progression
that has been followed to date. They either need to rebalance the subs as they are
or look at changing how they implement newer subs.

Quoted from slayer6:

"Ok...

How about this:
KM SS2 deck gun, 3.46" hits even harder than KM 11"LHE and has 6.75" range...
KM SS3 deck gun, 4.1" hits comparatively to the US 12" LHE and has 6.75"sL range...

Going off that trend...

How hard do you think the Surcouf would hit with its twin 8" guns?"

If subs are going to have BB firepower, they need to at least use gunners.

Oh and for the 2 support slots i should put a Engineer and a Repairer? Right?

For all subs, the gunner is a normal gunner (main gunner:rld, acc) and you just put
him on the gun slot (where the gun is) and load up your 1 bind of ammo.

@ shigure

What kind of gunner do you use on your sub?

I've had a gunner on my deck gun since SS3 and there are very few times I regret
having it. I've knocked out everything from FF to crippled BB and CV with it. If you've got
BB lvl gunners you can use i'd recommend it for pretty much every SS3 and above.

LordKelvin,
For me it comes down to loading a Gunner vs a Repairer. Then there's the whole 1
5" shell vs BB broadside equation to take into account :)

I'm not for OP'ing the SS as I believe the SS4 subs are already powerful as it but if
they do release SS5s then I wouldn't mind seeing the deck guns being operated
without a gunner.

If you've ever played the Silent Hunter series then you've experienced how useful a
deckgun can be.

I personally don't see why more people don't use the deck gun, even if it's crap
compared to the KM flak guns. They're inaccurate, fire one shell at a time, contain only
40 shots in a bind, and reload slowly, yes, but there is no substitute for the feeling that
you get from crippling/sinking a DD who thought that you'd be utterly helpless once you
surface and they can dance around you, or from finishing off a BB that you crippled
when he thinks he's safe from your torpedo tubes, or whatnot.

At least 75% of the time it's pointless to use the deck gun, yes, but if you can get close
enough, you can negate the accuracy problem and do upwards of 5-8k damage with
the deck gun alone. Doesn't hold a candle to what you can do with the torps, but hell if
it ain't funny.
