I'm 2 or 3 levels away from my O class sub so any tips? Things that I should be aware of?

The O class, along with other subs in the US line, is played as "Defensive" Subs.
They are used to counteract enemy subs.

Unlike IJN or KM Subs, which are mainly offense. Your job will be mainly hunting
down enemy subs.

As such, DO NOT attempt to cross the map (unless you have a high crew or the
enemy has no sub).

At GB or GB2 starts, wait in your position until your friends leave. Your job is to
defend enemy subs. So wait until they come close to your teammates.

Boom. When you see your ship sunk by enemy subs, move to that spot and
engage. Try your best not to launch all your salvos at once. Use 1 torp to threaten
the enemy sub and dive. Once the enemy sub wasted all the salvos, you launch
yours. You will have a high chance of success this way (of course, dud rounds also
appear).

Once clear of enemy subs, move on to engage capital ships. If your team sucks, you
should be able to find 1 or 2 BBs coming out from the north or south.

Max out. You need 90% of the crew for it to work. Max out your planesmen.

Planesmen - Full Crew, you Need all that air
Sonar - Full Crew, you need to see underwater
BO - 10 recruits, you don't need anything here, doesn't help you see underwater. I'm also
superstitious of having just 1 recruit, just in case you lose him and your BO goes away.
Torps - Max out, you will love it when your experts give you insane reload time.

I didn't skipped the O type. The O type is a great starter sub. The fact that it sucks so
much at lvl and is so slow, forces you to plan a head, and play like an actual sub driver.
Also dealing with enemy ASW, either subs or DDs, is the bread and butter to SS driving.

1. Learn how to SS vs SS. set yourself up to get yourself an advantage, don't ever play
chicken with KM.
2. You will only be able to kill Subs, CLs, and DDs. You won't make it to a BB in most cases.
3. If you get near a BB, don't chase it. You will not catch up with 17 knots underwater.
It's impossible, You won't even catch up to an engy-less nevada. Don't chase, you have to
wait for cutback, or for another one to pass by in range.

You will figure out how to play in the end. It's a perfect introduction to our little
underwater world.

BTW, if you meet a DD, and look on his T slots, once in a while, you can see a nice pretty
Depth charge Rack aiming at you. Yes, you might want to zoom in once in a while. And if
you turn to face him, i bet he'll run away.

What been hasn't been forum banned for spamming yet?

Anyway. I suggest skipping it and waiting for the SS2. SS1s without high lvl engys tend to
suck.

You've already received some excellent tips...except from that Ben guy.

Just two comments I would add.

4. Conserve your air. You'll probably want to dive as soon as you start getting shot at,
but if you wait 5 or so seconds for the BB's to engage something else you can resurface
and just dive when they start shooting at you again.
------ I wouldn't suggest doing this unless you are really having air supply problems. For
one thing, resurfacing in the middle of the map as you charge towards the enemy battle
line leaves you completely blind to any nearby subs who will quite happily torp you while
they are invisible to you. The second reason I wouldn't do this is because subs on the
surface tend to "push" enemy ships away from them as they try to stay out of your torp
range. Chasing down a BB345 that can OH at 40kt in your 20kt boat is a losing proposition.

As for what type of ships to attack I would suggest you focus on BB1s and then move up the
BB foodchain from there. I say this because you might only be able to get off 4 - 8 torps
before you are forced to surface and then are blown apart. Of those 4 - 8 torps you can only
count on 70 - 80 % of them exploding on contact. A Lion II, Montana, Yammy, H44, etc etc
will all eat your 4 - 8 torps and probably still have bulge left for more. Whereas you may
cripple or even sink that BB1, BB2, PBB, etc with a 4 or 8 torp salvo.

Otherwise, welcome to the USN SS corps. We have lousy subs but I hear our CVs are good.

ben, stop talking and read instead. There's only one type of torpedo the O class can use,
it comes equipped with it, and it cannot be changed. And many BB bring escort ships with
sonarmen on them, so you're not as invisible as you might think.

This site contains the answers.

But the short of it... which ship should you kill? Anything that comes in range. And
with your first sub, that's the real trick.

there are lots of different torps u can use, some are faster, some are slower, some go
farther,some go shorter,some deals big damage,some deal small damage,once u
submerge,u are completely invisible to your enemies only, but watch out, for enemy
FFs,DDs,CLs,and CVs,they can have sonar man on their ship and can know were u
are at close range,FFs and DDs have automated sonars which they dont need to
use sonar man unless they wanted to equip 1 on board for further sub detecting
range,BBs cannot have sonar man on board,so in order for them to find enemy
subs,BB players must see where the torp was launch and fire there depth charge or
hedge hogs there,u are completely in invisible to enemy BBs when u are
submerged,so submarines are very deadly to BBs

torps from all subs are deadly to use against BBs when u are underwater

If i do get the O class what ship would you recommend me trying to sink? And how
much damage does the torpedo do?

Unless you have level 90+ engineer, your success in a sub will be limited to situations
where people are stupid enough to run into you. I'm getting KM SS now and I don't even
bother with using those I could until I am at level for SS3.

Not that there are any chances of success in US SS1 even with high level crew.

And you don't want to use SS unless you have reached torpedo reload cap or you reload
within 12 seconds.
