OK, for starters I've read the guides and spent probably 30 blitz's trying this.

I'm at level, my gunners are lvl 36 standard. I'm using the proper guns and tactics. My
spread are just SO BAD that I'm only landing 1 shell on target at medium-long (ideal)
range. And while that shell hits for 250+, it's insufficient to kill even a Z99. So is HA
something to hold off on until the gunners are decent?

Someone give me some inspiration.

I've been trying the same thing; you just have to pick on the larger ships, its pretty
awesome when you get it down. Its just really hard to hit the smaller ships.

5" APC shells are basically LHE shells with some AP ability - thus, they'll deal full damage
on unarmoured and light-medium-armoured targets (whether DD, CL, etc.). Unlike
"pure" AP shells that are used in guns larger than 5", APC CAN be bounced by extreme
amounts of armour.

per-shell damage should be similar.

Question in regards to shell damage:

Do the HA damage only apply to ships with heavy armor? In other words if HA shells
land on DD's will they do similar damage to levels to and HA shells landing on a CA or
BB? Or less or more?

Just curious.

DD's are too fast to be HAed at normal situations. You can HA them when battlelines emerge
- if they actually do. It's been more than a year since I was in noobkrieg and everyone
just fictoried.

If you don't have many vets on your gunners your spread will be bad for a long time making
the game less "enjoyable".

Unless you have spread decent enough to hit a CL with 4-6 shells at HA time, don't try it
and go for the lower angles. Also note that when you increase the eleveation from 45-55,
the range difference is almost nothing. When you go below 45 the range decreases very
little right until you are around 20.

Yup I can testify to you that HAing Z99's or other DDs for that matter, unless they're
crippled, is a very bad idea; I enjoy rushing and eating noob HA Atlantas with my Z99.
Course I'm not gonna let that happen to me but instead of heavy I just use the standard
APC rounds; the extra bind I use is for AAing out scouts.

There's not much you can do about the bad spread though, that's the trade you get for
well...god-like range! And while HA is considered 'dead art' it's actually practical;
those same skills you use in your Atlanta will transfer to your BBs. I recommend never
selling this ship!

My only gripe with the Atlanta is that I can't scout like I did with my Mpro so most of
the time I just play supportive role behind a CA or bigger ships. Don't expect to get much
kills on your own but a crippled BB would be helpless to you as opposed to using a rushing
DD to kill that dying giant.

And if you can really play smart, torp whores can't touch you either with exception of
maybe the TBers but they're gonna regret it with the insane AAW you have.

Oh and if you think the Atlanta is good, wait until you try their remodels but if you're
low on creds, you can skip the Atlanta but don't skip it's remodels! That is buy the main
boat first then remodel it immediately to save creds on spending on the Atlanta.

even on hobbit map, HAW atlanta can scrap AW furious in 20 sec, and prolly less if you get
lucky spread.

Just dont HAW DDs, as you'll waste tons of ammo. DDs is the reason we suggest carrying a
backbind of HE with the 5/54.

In the hobbit map, high angling probably isn't the best tactic, I used to high angle back
in the day before i quit and my account got wiped -.- but if you get a chance to do blitz
on any map other than hobbit then you will do much better.

Ok after playing about 25 more games with those guns, I'm getting raped. I can see
how this would be an excellent system, but with my gunners the spreads look like
someone is sprinkling shells across an arc at angles of 55-70. When the ships get closer
than 70, they can just pound me because I'm so squishy. Landing one shell per shot
isn't going to cut it (this is against CLs and CAs). I'm thinking I'm going to switch tactics.

Given the narrow confines of Blitz and your spread, I would actually suggest using the
5"/38 (either mk 38 or mk 29) for high angling. They do less damage and have less
range than the 5"/54, but faster reload and lower level means they're more forgiving for
you. And of course, choose large targets over smaller ones whenever possible.

Also, from one HAer to another: thanks for keeping the art alive!
