For the lulz you could armor up a monty with one gun with about 14.5 inch of deck.

That would bounce BB4 and some BB5 shells. But that setup is really for the fun.

0.2 Belt
150+ bulge.

That is my setup for my Montana. Sure I go 23/39 but losing 1 knot isn't that bad and the
added bulge helps.

Although if your against a good ss3/ss4 then your just screwed but against a ss1/ss2 that
added bulge just might buy you enough time to see him pop up and BOOOM. Show that thing
what a nice Monty broadside can do.

Janz, deck armor tends to be all or nothing versus shells. Either you have enough to
bounce the shot or you don't, and there's no measurable reduction for having "almost
enough" to bounce the shot. We tell you not to bother, because no US battleship can carry
enough deck armor to bounce the shells of another battleship. (The only two ships who can
are New Orleans and Omaha, and then only against 8" cruiser guns.)

Now against HE divebombers, there is SOME reduction in damage. It hasn't been thoroughly
tested though because incoming shells are generally more of a threat than dive bombers.

And I'm a firm believer in the well rounded armor myth of crew protection, myself. =)

notriel
belt -> 0.2
buldge -> until you loose a knot

thats all the armor you need in a US BB

so

0.2 deck is commonly recommended for BB5??

hmmm i think 1.0 deck is to soft if i catch a block of shells. what else if 0.2.

I run my Montana with:

0.2 Belt
3-4 Bulk
Bulge until I start to drop speed

Works good for me but I am also interested in the 0.2 deck to help with DBs. Anyone
done any testing on this?

janz009: Not really. You've given up the speed advantage, and 4.5" of deck will have
trouble bouncing 8" shells. Considering that you need to worry about 16.5-20" shells from
those other BB5s...

Stormvanger: 0.2" of deck reduces (HE) divebomber attacks?
...I think I need to do some testing.

0.2 belt, rest in bulge until you lose speed. works perfect for every bb in the game.

deck and bulk have no impact on crew death in my expirience, more a myth if you ask me.

That was a rough guide for pretty much every USN ship CL and up. CV can afford to loose a
couple more knots for bulge, since they won't need the speed to dodge shells on front line.
