  • UK CV Fighter Tactics

So, there have been a few threads going on recently, but none have really hit on
the nitty gritty of successfully controlling UK fighters. We in the Royal Navy realize
that our fighters are just about the lowest on the offensive power totem poll (only
MN is worse), BUT we have the highest durability. Okay, that's nice, now how do we
utilize our strenghts?

Being a new CV driver, I am still learning the ropes of CV tactics, but I hope that we
can get a thread going about useful techniques that may wind up as an addendum
to the UK CV Guide or pehaps a sticky in its own right.

First of all, I like to start off my GB2's by launching 2-2-4 in my Illustrious. This gives
me the chance to get some fighters out fast and start mowing down scouts -
depriving the other team their sight/rush opportunity.

I've also found that when the enemy CV has fighters camping your lower level CV/
BB's, it is a good idea to drag their fighters off. You can do this by sending a wave of
your planes near theirs, so the enemy fighters begin to chase, then you right-click
spam all the way over to their BB/CV line. This not only can deprive them of sight
over you, but also give your team sight while your fighters are in the Circle of Death.

Micromanaging is very important and the C.O.D. can be avoided by paying attention
to your flights. Double tapping the numeric key "1", "2", etc. will center on your flight
so you can know if they are doing what they are supposed to be doing and not just
in a C.O.D. with a random scout.

If you do find yourself in a C.O.D. situation, right-click spam the opposite way the
enemy plane is flying, thereby breaking the circle and giving your fighter a chance to
reengage.

What are some of your hard-earned UK techniques?

i have a question...

how do you manage to be even with other T3 out there?
I have massive problems at higher lvls (100+) with them.

are there any special "UK moves" i should learn to?

i remember IJN... when im in my IJN CV i simply drag my fighters in a tight formation
and use their speed to keep the enemy behind me and shooting the enemy fighters
while they follwing me.

any tips for my UK playstyle?

@delta yea thats good for high level fp. but low level planes dont fly tight. and not
every one will have
+12 pilots either some make do with +9's and +10's they wont start to group
tighhtly till they pass lvl 80 or so. but yea you are right about the tight fighter
grouping it certainly gains the advantage.

I've found that the different formations for fighters each have their own advantage. If you
are going fighter:fighter, having your squadron in a tight formation (almost on top of each
other) will greatly increase their lethality, especially if you can start picking off the other
fighters from the side.

Alternatively, because I don't carry scouts, I will put my fighters over the enemy line, and
manually drag them away one by one, until they are very widely dispersed around the
enemy BBs. This can be used to reduce deaths from AA barrages by giving them multiple
targets to shoot at. Also, if you can reduce your fighters heights, you have a wide patch of
fighters @ different altitude - a nightmare of AA ships. This also maximizes your side's
vision by revealing a larger part of the map due to your fighters covering a larger area.

I also briefly played around with using the T2 planes with my lvl 80 pilots, but found them
to be too slow for serious use. I've been sticking with the T3 Spitfires for now.

@ adamai

hey man play in whatever method that feels comfortable but do take not a couple of
fighters equals x3 as many scouts, ie 5ftr = 15 scouts which at lvl120 is plenty.

also in HA's, fleetwars and when i feel like in GB2's i dominate the enemy CV's by
providing almost 100% sight for our BB's and keeping the enemy side blind 85-90% of the game.

im more a convenience kind of guy and takeing up valuable ftr space with silly scouts
is a big no no for me. plus i dont mind looseing ftrs if it allows my team mates to see
for a little longer so we win. also ftrs kill scouts and scouts will never ever kill ftrs
well not lvl 105 t3 atleast.im gonna see if i can get away with waiting till lvl 120
before i use t4

Lets be honest here scouting with the repatched fighters is very wasteful. In gb2s i found it astonishing that
more cvs dont carry basic scout pilots.

Scouts scout, fighters fight. Scouts at sea level placed strategically for maximum vision, fighters on ur side of
the battlw line to keep the enemy blind (or kill anything that flies)

here is a nice usefull uk cv ftr tip for you.

when over friendly ships lower your ftrs to sea level, enemy planes will then lower to
engauge. this makes them far more suseptable to AAW from friendly ships. making it
easier for your ftrs to reign supreme.

another little tip is micro managment of ftrs. just leaving them to go round in circles
will cost you. instead keep breaking them from the engaugement and letting them
auto reinguage. for some reason uk ftrs apear to get some kind of bonus when they
first start their attack runs. this works better if you click your planes away on a
certain direction. i wont say which direction as it works really well for me and the
mroe people that know it the harder my battles will be.

and never let your planes attack head on, instead make sure you come from the
side thats north or south.

when useing bombers dont waste your time with uk db's they just blow, instead use
tb's they do a fair ammount of dmg and are at high level almost invincible to AAW.

and try to master the manuel fire for your torps. torps should be aimed for the very
centre of the ship for maximum dmg. hitting from the rear or front does something
like half dmg.

reason for manuel fire is your target doesnt get a big flashy warning target on him
and doesnt know to move.

always carry a seaman it gives a small boost to pilot ability and veterans have the
biggest impact on your pilots.

always lower ftrs below standard hight. most people are crap with AA.

and the absolute best tip is, do not fly over friendly ships that keep fireing their AA
with no regaurd for your planes, simply do something else. if they moan just moan
back.

and before any one starts moaning at me, i also drive bb's lol and i carry a scout ;) i
also drive a cv too. ill only provide eyes if my team are not being pains. if they start
to moan and sqwabble ill do my own thing.

chasing enemy fighters is really bad form. try to either attack head on but preferably
perpindicular and marginally ahead ( so planes are at right angles and infront of enemies).

Frequently during the fighter engagement you should double tap (so they can lock onto new
target, where u click isnt important) the fighters so they can re-engage the closest
fighter. AI is dumb and once its locked on a plane it will follow it to the ends of the
earth regardless of whats around it.
