  • An Odd engineer issue, bug? or is this supposed to happen?

Alright, I've recently been leveling up a new batch of sailors on an AA equipped Emerald.

On it I have

Gunnerx2 (R slot)
89 engineer x3 (Support slot)
Pilot x 1 (Support slot)
Pilot x1 (T slot)
30 Engineer x 1 (T Slot)

The emerald goes 32/42 with this set up.

Then I switched things around to this, and put the low engineer in a support slot

Gunnerx2 (R slot)
89 engineer x3 (Support slot)
Pilot x 1 (T slot)
Pilot x1 (T slot)
30 Engineer x 1 (Support slot)

The emerald goes 32/41 with this set up.

Now, the sailors on the ship are the same in the before and after, I only shuffled them
around a bit. The lowbie Engineer who I expected would not add much, seems to decrease my
overheat ability. Its odd because its not an issue of weight, since he was on the ship
previously when it was going faster.

Now is this supposed to happen? Should a low level engineer make a ship go slower if he is
in a slot where his ability gets put to use? (For reference he has 11 in the engineering
stat and full experts/rookies)

If an engineer can't reach the operating level of speed/OH, then level is decreasing?

What is the level range to, at least, maintain speed/OH ? If i have lvl 115 Enginers and
put a lvl 107 engineer same occurs?

Engineers only work in the supports slots. So changing it putting the low lvl engy in
there is going to make you go slower

the reason you see a difference when moving the Engys around is that the LVL30
Engy does nothing when it's in a T slot, so you're in essence only using the 3 lvl 89
engys. When you move him to a support slot, his stats are taken into account and,
since he's so low, he brings down the average ability enough to result in the lower
speed. Leave him on a T slot and you'll be fine and he'll still get his exp.

Oh, I did not realize that. Good to know for future applications. For now though I'm just
leveling the guy up to lvl 89, so that I can use him.

Thanks!

Try only 3 lv 89 engys,it will be faster.
If there is a big difference between your sailors' lvl,OH speed may decline.

This is a feature of the diminishing returns in how engineers stack. If the true
abilities vary by more than about a factor of 2, the lowest engineer pulls the others down
in terms of OH speed (though not time)

See Adalbert's guide for details:

I believe it's because of the big difference in level between the engineers. I am not too
sure the details of this, but engineers have to be around the same level, otherwise the
low level one will cause the entire crew to be less efficient. Maybe someone can give you
a better answer, or look around the forum.

Hence you are better off having the noob eng sit in the T slot doing nothing, rather
than have him being clumsy around the high level Eng.
