  • What's the point in armor?

Just curious how it works, it seems like high armor=enemy shoots you once, sees you have
armor, switches to AP and does max dmg anyways regardless of how much armor you have.
Since 8''s seem to have max efficiency against any blitz size ships I decided to throw
13.3'' belt and 4.5'' of deck with 8'' trips on my Renown.

The result is a guy shoots me once, does 0, switches to AP and blasts the crap outta me
with maximum efficiency using 6'' guns. It seems that 13.3'' of belt armor did absolutely
nothing. In monetary terms that's 5.5 million worth of belt armor having 0% efficiency vs
6'' guns, so what gives? Is there even a point in having anything besides bulge?

@Mastermix Yes if used properly AP shells can devastate a heavily armored ship. I
reccomend not using AP shells unless a ship packs a Deck of 7" or more. This is for
GB. If you are in blitz I recommend using Heavy HE and maybe packing 1 or 2 binds
of AP. I wil elaborate later but I've got somewhere to be.

tbh running a renown with 8" guns isnt fun..... you have next to no range and you have
made the step up to BB which means you are now a quite a big target (atleast compared to
CL/CA) and the BB5 will one shot you no matter what Armour set up you run

I love my york, I just wanted to see if I could go invunerable mode in the renown :P, but
you're right, the small profile on the york is awesome, that was my favorite ship by far.
I also have a county which in my opinion is better than the york (on even battles) as much
as I love the york. The HA shots on the county are insane, hit a few 1000+s with the 8''s
today at high angle.

As far as Blitz goes in general I seem to do best with smaller guns simply because
everyone plays on a tiny map. I can easily do 30k+ in my sirius and my gunners accuracy
still falls a bit short on the 6''s but meh at least it's decent there. The main issue is
with accuracy. that's why I do dreadful with the renowns normal guns, the spray is
unbelievable, and not too amazing with 8''s either and it is the spread that gives issues
with these guns, it wasn't as bad back in the day when I was fighting others with gunners
on my level, as well as ships, but that's not the case today, Spraying 8''s with my lvl 57
gunners just doesn't stand up to 6''s that block at close range. Running into walls in a
tiny box doesn't help the case much.

Armor tends to not be that terribly useful at lower levels unless if you know how to play
good range games.

The difference between HE and AP in lower caliber guns isn't all that much, and the time
to switch to the other is pretty minimal. It also depends on the ship you have. Some
ships are just terrible for armoring, while others are great.

Dunno why you'd use the Reown with triple 8", York is a much better platform for it IMO.
It's not as fat and more manueverable. It kinda depends on the level and skill of your
crew as well, cause if your crew is bad, armor will help a lot more as it should keep up
the survivability of your ship and you don't have that much overheat to take advantage of
the gain in speed by not having it.

First off, I can't blockshot 8'' I didn't buy some godly gunners/upgrades. My firing even
with 8'' is iffy at best, they're good gunners by old standards 12 base acuraccy I believe
or 11 i'd have to check, trained up a lot in missions too for experts/vets. As for
blockshotting, gunners like that were rare back in the day, BB6's unload as fast and
accurate as CA's used to. That being said I went up against a Brookland that DID
blockshot, easily the most powerful CL in the game. So why didn't I just roast him?
Because he fired 10x faster, more accurate and did full dmg regardless of my armor that's
why. Even hitting 100% he would have out dmged me by a long shot. Also he got so close
cause I charged him to utilize my (apparently useless) 13.3'' belt armor which I didn't
know was useless at the time.

Meh, I learned the hard way, it happens. What I did realize is that once I get to GB2 i'd
have to convert my BB to an anti aircraft gun or get eaten in 1 shot until I grind to
BB4+'s, that kinda was the last straw, I preferred the old evenly matched battles, dd/cl,
cl/ca, ca/bc etc. This just isn't my style i'm sorry to say I think it was a mistake
coming back.

My motto used to be "Enjoy what you have as you have it, cause if you powerlvl to the end
you only have 1 thing left and realize there's nothing else". Sadly it's at the point
where it isn't possible for me at least to enjoy it at every level. It's turned into,
powerlvl or die, not my style at all, the only way for people at certain levels to have
fun is if they are given a high lvl BB and crew and told to have at it. You shouldn't have
to work to have fun in a game. I enjoyed it and came in first almost all the time at every
level back in the day, I enjoyed the competition of other skilled players, sadly skill
seems to have little room left in this game. Ahh but i'm way off the topic of armor :P
i'll probably go to CL's which are the most balanced for Blitz til I get lvl 60 gunners
then im out.

Honestly? Why did you let a ship get close enough to use 6" guns on you in the first place?

And then why didn't you blockshot the crap out of them when you saw him shooting at
you?

In the time it took him to fire, do nothing, switch to AP and fired one salvo, you should really
have killed him.

It is more effective at higher levels though, where range plays a big part.

You can bounce AP. It just takes a hell of alot of belt. And quite honestly, having ships being
able to bounce HE and AP of similar levelled ships (I.e. in Blitz) is wrong balance wise.

Okay, and yeah all his shots were hitting belt, it just doesn't stop AP is all. Since i'm
in a smaller ship as far as GB2's go people were telling me to just go AAW for my ship and
defend other BBs

No. It is good to have armour to bounce HE shells.

Armour increases your effective HP against ships, at the cost of speed and turning ratio.
