I too have seen the unpleasantness of the ss1. I was all gung ho about getting a sub, got the 'package' from NF and realized what an uphill battle it would be.
With a skeleton crew I'm crawling at 22 kts surfaced/18 submerged. Obviously there are so many disadvantages most people skip it, but I think its worth using at least to get the hang of using subs well.
From what I've seen so far, the best thing to do with the O class is to hang back, don't suicide early in the game. Later in the battle, when the fleets are more dispersed, you can get lucky and have a BB or something wander in your path.
That's really all you can do. You're too slow, with too limited air to really charge up to a BB and sink it. Far better to loiter in the area and take advantage of an opponent that's distracted. Because I have so much working against me, I tend to try and sink whatever comes my way- yes torpedos are very limited but honestly I'd rather get a few thousand attk at the end of the battle than get killed by a DD anyway.
