Many people don't fully understand their role in the operations of a fleet. No, not 'fleet' like 1stSSF, Jedi, ect. Fleet as in a group of ships traveling together in Gb2, ect.
The glory of a fleet within GB2 is that no matter what ship you're in, you have a specific role that you are expected to carry out. Some of those roles require specialized sailors/ships, while some only require you to be there. I've taken some time to compile the general role expections of ships within a fleet manuever.
BB, The Iron Beast: A battleships role is fairly straightforward, engage enemy ships at mid- long range. Battleships are also commonly expected to have some if not minimal AA capability.
BC, The Crusader: A battlecruiser's role is similar to a BB's, but is expected to engage targets from short-mid range. This is essentially a close range defensive BB. As with the BB, it is expected to have some AA capability.
CV, Death From Above: A carrier has high expectations. It's role serves as offensive, defensive, as well as supporting. Carrier's are expected to provide fighter cover to their invaluable ships, shoot down enemy scouts to keep the enemy sight lines limited, as well as use divebombers and torpedo bombers to engage key ships in the enemy's lines. Carriers are generally expected to use fighters for AA, but if the carrier also has gun slots, it is expected to AA as well.
CA, Metal Hammer: A heavy cruiser is a versatile ship, and thus not bound to any specific role. It can be adapted to Anti-Aircraft, Hedgehog, Depth Charge, or Mining. However, it is usually more appreciated if it AA's.
CL, Silent Strike: A light cruiser usually falls within 2 categories; The Kita and everything other then the kita. The Kita is expected to launch torp waves torward the enemy, fairly straightforward. Other light cruisers are expected to have AA capability.
DD, Metal Minions: Destroyers are fairly adaptable to various needs. It's noted that due to their size and speed, they are well suited for Hedgehogs as well as depth charges. Any AA capability a destroyer can provide is also nice.
FF, Bug on the Windshield: Frigates roles are fairly simple. Hedgehog, depth charge. About it.
If you noticed, I pointed out that anti-aircraft guns should be on every ship in the fleet, no matter it's size. Why? Well, the point of a fleet was to more effectively protect the ships from any threat encountered. When enemy planes were spotted, the air literally lit up in anti- aircraft fire, from all the fleets ships. This means that more AA was in the air at once, giving a higher chance that planes would be shot down. The same concept applies here. No matter the size of your ship, more AA in the air means more planes going down.
