  • Improved SS deck gun performance?

They're intended for attacking small ships, finishing off crippled vessels, and picking off
the stragglers of a convoy - when the conservation of torpedoes is a concern.

The main problem seems to be that they are very unreliable, doing anything from a
useless 50 damage, up to a moderate 600 damage. They fire slowly, and there's only
one of them, so whatever damage they do inflict is next to pointless.

Subs are confined to great battles, and in that scenario, deck guns are nearly useless...
If you're above water, you're just plain dead.
If there was some sort of objective to attack enemy merchant vessels, then maybe the
deck gun would have some utilization, but not now, not in GB, in there they're just rusty
outdated WWI guns for sinking a row boat or something.

I've sunk a few ships with it, once while I was chasing a bunch of runners who lost their
north BBs I managed to pick off the wounded ones that got out of friendly BB range
before they took a killing blow.

SS2 with ship level crew is slow, more so submerged, so I couldn't catch up at all, I had
to use the deck guns range to do anything

You know, sinking a L2 with a single gun is awesome enough, even if its damaged.
Real sub deck guns had a low rate of fire as well, not to tell that they're very useful in
HA games, saving your torps when you find a APA ship.

Pointless? i think you haven't even sunk someone with it yet, the IJN deck guns in
particular have the ability to sink dds in a few salvos.

I think what they really need is a slight increase in rate of fire. Maybe even have a
special 'hit zone' displayed on where your shells are likely to hit. It's one measly gun, it
would be nice to have some assurance that it'll hit where you want it to.

By no means should it replace or be better than using the torpedoes, but it should excel
at what it's meant for, and if they're taking 3 seconds to fire and scattering all around
your target, you're better off firing another torpedo

i see that the deck gun is fine the way it is you have 1 shell any where from 3" to 5"
and you deal 400+ dmg, with it any other 3" gun would at best be about ~60~ dmg

Most of the subs have 3.46 to 5 inch guns. The damage they deal is great for
their gun size and the range is better then most guns of the same size. Sure,
I would love for them to have a higher rate of fire, better accuracy or both...
but the deck is is a last resort. The Torp tubes are your "main guns" and the
deck gun is just a backup (at best, I can agree with that).

On the up side of this, if the deckgun was better, more people might consider
it an option as opposed to to a Repairman or Restorer on the R slot, which
buffs that SD that I hear folks complaining about on SSs so often.

But so many people scream overpowered right now...

I saw a Type-VIIC sink a partially damaged L2 with its deck gun. Pretty nice kill if you
ask me. Granted, the L2 was distracted by other BBs, but that happens often and can
surely be replicated.
