I'd like to ask for opinions if you class Planesman and Sonarman to the Chief level? I was
looking at trainworld, and I see that the Repair and Restore growth get so decreased,
while potential only increases by 4. If I leave them at 2nd planesman/sonarman, I miss +3
on potential (air supply and sonar), but I get a good growth in repair and restore (I only
get -8).

Also, crew growth is 7 for 2nd Sonar/Planes and 9 on Chief, so it saves weight.

Is the +3 on potential worth the -21 on repair and restore? Will this +3 have a great
impact on how far I see under water and how fast I reload air?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Sure helped knowing that by the time you have high level
engies and reps, you'll have good enough support ability for your ship. I already have a
level 48 sonar, classed on time to 1st sonar when I posted the question, but to be sure, I
rolled another +15 pot sailor and will leave it at 2nd. I will compare when they are
already at the same level.

I read adalbert's guide again and made a comparison. A sonar with 1160K true ability
(probably easy to hit with normal amount of vets at high level) will have a TSR of 11.75,
and 13 TSR at 2130K true ability. If I'm not mistaken, that's only about an inch of sight
at max zoom. Is this 1 inch very important, considering that US subs have one of the worst
turning rates of all the Subs? More sight might mean your BBs will be happy for the vision
you're giving them, but I'm a sub! I'm supposed to torp ships.

There are 2 sides to the classing at chief and not classing.

When you class both planesman and sonarman to chief they take a hit on the
Engine, Repair and Restore stats. So there are players that like having the extra
ability in those stats and those that want max ability in the main stat of
planes/sonar. Although I do not know the cap on air recharge and sonar "sight"
range, I feel confidant that you would hit the cap no matter what way you class
them. I do notice that the indiviual sailor has a dramatic effect on the ship, so I'm
not worried about the "total" stat of the crew. When it comes to my subs I go for
maximum class abilty for the minimum weight.

I use 2 Engy's and 1 Rep on my US SS4 crew and have about 850 SD and I classed
my Planesman and Sonarman to Chief on time. The only crew member that is
ghosted is the BO 0 Rookies 0 Experts and 30-40 Vets.

I know that this is not the direct answer but you seem like you have done your
homework and understand the Pro's & Con's to classing.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

So it is up to your playing style as to how you class your sailors.

So Both Sonarmen and Planemens Should class on time? or should i put it this way.
Both Of them should class until Chief class?

If you class the sonarman on time you can make up for the slight loss in repair ability
by using a repairman in the gun slot. Once you hit SS4 with an at level repairman
you'll be @ 700 SD or higher. Get a higher level repairman and you'll be knocking on
900 in no time.

Everything I have read says Class Planesman properly, leave sonar at 2nd sonarman.

If I remember/have the patience to do it tonight, I have a delay classed scout on my US
crew (used to maintain higher rep/rest stats) that I classed to scout around 70 or so I
think. The benefits from keeping the rep/res stat higher for long really don't justify
it. It provides moderate SD (think it is around 60-70 at 120).

A +12 Rep (unboosted) at 1st rep will have growth of 29, compared to a +12 rep ability on
a sonar classed to 2nd sonar will still have +12. The difference is huge, and the benefit
you will get from a +12 growth stagnant through all levels will not provide huge gains.

I'm by no means an SS expert, have played them to T3/T4 before but never a fan. However
from a logic standpoint my first statement makes sense to me.
