I may seem like a complete noob for asking this, but does anyone have any tips on the
grind up to the SS1? Then after I get it, tips for getting it through the SS lines.

The grind is just that. Have fun in Blitz getting trivial exp for your sailors.

What I suggest is look at the SS4 (KM SS U-Flak) as your goal setter. When the SS5
comes out, it may have an extra support slot. The U-Flak has 3 support positions
along with two gunners and two torpedomen.

That means:
BO, Planesman, Sonarman, Enginner, Two Gunners, Two torpedomen. You need to
have the BO and Gunners at L74; Torpedo is L59. Chances are your gunners will be
at a lower level than your torpedomen. You absolutely, positively, must have and
definitely want the Gunners, so you will have to rotate a gunner in your gun slot in
the SS2 (Engineer in gunner slot for SS1). Get your gunners up to L74 independent
of the SS, or your gunners will be about 5 levels below your BO if you cycle them.

The deck guns are AA/HE setup and will cut a squadron of bombers in half, finish off
a burning, smoking CV or take out an approaching ASW DD with ease. These are
must-have guns and they work real good.

got a pair of lvl 30 aa gunners? if so get an emden and put all your sub crew,
r slot = 2x aa gunners
t slot = 1x torp man
the other torp man together with your sonar and planes on support slots

work fine to me ;) you could get experts in aaing + credit and exp :)

Km ss1 is an easy mode as first SS between all nations, due to its proximity
torpedoes. The bad news is you only have 3 torpedoes in the front and none in the
back, but you have space for mines. The other bad news is your torpedo reload time
is slow. Try getting more vets in your torpedoman, try getting it to 100 vets and rest
experts, that should work for faster reload. As SS1 i will recommend to stay as
support submarine as Capital ss scort or stay in your area supporting your team
BB's. Sometimes, major submarine drivers they dont have time to look around when
they are engaging one of your team BBs or Submarines, thats the right time to
launch a torpedo.DO NOT go to front, if there is many ASW around, they will spot
you easily and HH on you, plus your Critical dive is not that fast, so you can die in
10x10.My advise is play supportive role until you get SS2.

Similar to the advice about the Kitakami I gave you, it's possible to power level a
national sailor
and convert it to a BO later. This once again applies only if you have other lines.
Since you seem
to be new to torps/subs, and if you did power level beyond SS1, I suggest you still start
at SS1.
Once you get the hang of things, move onto SS2 etc. I powerleveled straight to SS4 but bought
a SS2 thinking it would be irresponsible to start as a SS newb in a SS4.

prepare the correct crew, and just play with the ships before SS1.
you may even drop the SS1 and level until you reach SS2 level instead.
unless you have enough credits, otherwise, go to play blitz.

getting to level 37 is never called a grind.
