Okay I've played my arse off for a week now. I've have a cramped mouse hand,
callouses on fingers from keyboard keys, eyes burnt from low yield monitor radiation
and I'm back to my 'L' Class. My wife and Kids no longer know me...I sit in a haze
of cigerette smoke playing for hours. I finally reach the first CL I can get, I have
credits to spend, and outfit the ship as best I can, I go out in my shinny new Dido
loaded for bear. My ass gets kicked in 2.76 seconds, Okay that was a fluke, I go
repair/reload, and out again I go. The battle starts, I sneak into posistion and line
up on an enemy, he sees me to late, I fire, he fires back I sink again...WTF? Does
the Dido really suck that bad? Is it worth it at all to jump into a Dido at Level 30, or
is it just a sick carrot dangling there, condeming me to a watery grace if I so try to
use it again. I sold it, re-outfitted an 'L' and I'm back to earning credits and kicking
some butt. Anyone have any suggestions for me on what to do, stick with the 'L' or
find a miricle for the DD. I'd love to run a CL, the whole point of the game seems to
be to advance in ships and experiance, but this Dido seems like a bottomless pit of
exasperation. Suggestions?

it is true that the dido is quite crappy if your a first timer using it but the benefit to
dido is that it can fit more ammo to guns that can't for a sirius and has better range
advantage than the sirius. dido potentially is good if you max out your entire
displacement of armor but that will cost 300k doing so so work hard to find a way to
get that $$ and dido can be strong if using the right guns. i account ppl mostly will
say dido sux to ppl that are first time users as dido should be best using the dual 6"
XXII in just CL games as they have the strongest dmg of all other 6"(arouse 425
dmg at max range) and in secret, they can outrange almost all CL2s with those 6"
guns said again. Dido too is the
smallest profile of any other CL as this will also inflict your survival as it can escape
much shots that would've done to you than an average sized CL.

L-class is still horrible without the right guns due to its minimum gun slots as they
need to have the dual 6" to balance it as a good dd or it's just inferior using it.
Suggestions are said above but it's your choice to choose to go bak L-class or
struggle yourself in a dido with the long rld 5.25" guns.

The 5.25" guns at lvl 30 is slight improvement to dido but i rather suggest waiting
for the remodel of sirrius or wait for lvl 38 gunners for the 6"XII L for maximum range
effect. IMO, use the sirrius if you like close to mid range combat as it has xtra gun
turret than the dido(preferrably use the 6" XVII D for maximum firepower and rld)
and in convoys(depends unless your fully armored). Use the dido at lvl 38 if you like
long range battles but in just CL games as those guns can even outrange the
edinburgh as your next ship route if you're still too poor affording it. As for york,
same reason as edinburgh but you need lvl 45 gunners to make the york what it
should be.

Plan ahead and think IYO what choice is right as theres no turning bak if you make
too many casualties fiancially.

The short version is:

Don't get Dido until you have lvl 33 gunners (for the 2x6" guns), it really is a pain in
the ass before then.

Once you get there, the upgrade to Sirius (level 34) is worthwhile, unless you plan
to go Edin immediately (which you don't unless you're mad or seriously rich, or both).

Over all, don't play CLs like a DD. Stay back, shoot at max range when possible - try
using a bind or 2 of light HE in your B slot for longer range shots and use DDs as a
screen for torps. Once you have a reasonable amount of armour you can get in the
thick of it, but remember that more range = more XP, so it's worth hanging back and
picking targets off at range.

There is a fairly steep learning curve moving from a DD to a CL. You go from a small,
quick and agile little boat; to a big, lumbering, slow barge. Honestly it takes sometime
to adapt your playing style to match the strengths of the new ship. It is why 1.5 and low
2 bar CLs are everyones bitch.

Here are my tips for a successful Dido experience.

1. Max out your displacement. You won't be as fast as a DD so do not bother trading off
crew or armor or ammo for speed. This is also just as true in CL/CA/BB games. You won't be
fast enough to close on bigger ships to do damage. And they will hit you and hurt you.
If you cannot afford the 250-350k for armor, max out your crews and add armor as you can
afford it. Fatter crews will improve your accuracy and repair/restore rates.

2. Don't bother with torps. Torpedo tubes and torps add several hundred extra tons that
can be better used for armor and crew. More armor = more protection from hits. More crew =
better gun accuracy and repair/restore levels.

3. Use reasonable amounts of armor (ie don't armor whore). Again the point is don't
sacrifice crew to have half a foot of armor. Change your tactics so DDs aren't engaging
you at broadside at closerange. Plus I do not feel that you can carry enough armor to
provide adequate protection against larger shells. Better to be able to hit something with
fatter crews and take more damage than the other way around. (as an adendum you could come
back later when you are in a higher lvl ship and AW all you want with minimal crews --
gunners and BO only; but if you are all about the grind and moving up don't sacrifice your
crew quality).

4. Don't play a CL like a DD. Dido/Sirius plays well at medium to medium-long range. That
means keeping your distance from other DDs. If your gunners are semi-decent one or two
good solid salvos will do enough damage to send a DD running off. But this also means that
you will need to move in to engage other CLs and CAs. However if your spread is reasonably
good you can fire from longer range.

Once you understand the strengths of your ship and how to play to them sailing a Dido can
be fun. The second set of 5.25s, that come at lvl 30, make the ship much more usuable than
the initial set. They have a faster ROF plus can HA if you are so inclined. However the
2x6/45s at lvl 33 change the character of the ship. All of a sudden you have some serious
firepower. I was pleasently surprised how much better my Dido got with the 6s.

Now you do not need to upgrade to Sirius. Dido has an advantage in that it has more gun
space... which could come in handy for the later two sets of 6/50s. Both pack more power
and more range. Sirius cannot mount them and a decent load of ammo, but Dido can.

Indeed

When buy the Edimbugh to have the Sirius per months, disappoints to me. I things
that was not as good as longed for. Now, with but armor it is another thing. With
himself of the order of 10k by battle to easy, often but.

It is good for staying in the "L" by a time, but I insist that to fight with a DD he is
very different that to salute it with a CL

Generally all low level CL1's suck when you first get them. Low level gunners have crap
spread and reload. Low level BO's have trouble spotting the fall of shells at max range
(not such a problem with the Dido's crap range guns as other nations CL1's). Low level
support crew really aren't doing much until you get to the late 30's levels and even then
it's minimal. With the new super overpowered DD's low level CL1's don't really have a
chance these days. It was bad enough before the new DD's, but now it's next to impossible
I feel.

Stick with the L Class until level 33 gunners before even thinking of buying the Dido. But
even then you might be better off staying in the L and using the bigger guns. Learn to use
manual aiming if you don't already, it's essential IMHO. Maybe get the Sirius remodel, but
with either the Sirious or the Dido you are going to need to armour to max displacement to
stand much of a chance.
