Recently, I hit level 30. First one in my clan to get there. Currently, my higher BO is
at 32. I am still driving the DDX. Selling it would give me approximately 70K in
credits. I am also sitting on 60K in credits. To get a Light Cruiser, I need 175K in
credits.

With the way most are playing the game, you go about 50/50 on winning
engagements. When you win, and survive, you can gain a couple thousand credits.
When you lose, you do slightly better than break even after repairs.

I can play the game to tactically retreat whenever the battle goes bad. However,
this seems like the wimpy way out. I would even argue that this does not
encourage you to be a team player because you are concerned about credits. I
would hate to be labelled as someone who runs when the tide of battle doesnt go
his way.

Maybe I am missing something very basic. As it is however, I would argue that the
credits earned while gaining experience should allow you to experiment slightly with
different set ups as well as purchase that next ship when the time comes.

Since you are at a point that I was at not all the long ago, I will let you in on my
experience.

First, I will say the DDX route was closed to me until I reached level 30 so I saved
that money from not making that purchase. Up until level 30, you can pretty much
sell each ship then buy each new ship and upgrade as they come along. After level
30, it is not so easy. And a BTW, I also have a 50/50 win/loss ratio. Oh, and play
normal games, they give the best balance of cash/XP.

I knew, for an Atlanta I needed at least 175k just for hull (I did not yet have it). I
think, like you, I had 70k or so. So I saved. I figured I needed 285k (it is actually
more) to buy and outfit the Atlanta and with that goal in mind I ground up to level
32 before I could buy the new ship. Do not sell your old ship unless you are 100%
sure you will have enough cash for the new one. (In fact, try to keep one ship of
each class, if at all possible - DD, CL, etc.) I saved my money, bought the Atlanta
and found I did not have quite enough to put to sea. I think I played 3-5 days
longer in my Gearing DDR before I finally took her out.

Now, what about upgrades? The Atlanta can be made into the Juneau II or the
Oakland. Each costs 52k but the kicker is, you will have to re-equip which will cost
you even more out-of-pocket. If you decide to do this, you need nearly 100k in
hand. I was not going to do this but I was going to save for the next CL in line.
Personally, I found the Atlanta with 5/54s, not to my liking (echos of, "What's not to
like?" are heard throughout the community). So I did buy the Oakland and now
have to make even more money before I move to a new class; I am glad I made the
purchase.

It would not surprise me if many people go through a period like we have at some
point in their careers.

I also found that my crews were not as good as they could have been. I had no
Special Service crewman, for instance. The later cruisers have scouts and you will
need a pilot. Now is as good a time as ever to think about leveling some new crew.
This is what I am currently doing. I went back to the newbie area and started
another set of crew with thegoal of improving my choices. This has the added
benefit of allowing to make money back in that Fletcher for a while and you still have
your DDX for them when they get high enough. Without having to buy every ship as
you do this should help to save some cash for that next ship after the Atlanta.

And one other bit of advice, make you gun choices carefully and stick with them for
as long as practicable.

Op convoy tends to give less credits than "Normal" Games.

Often you will find that when you reach the level for a ship you will either not have
enough credits, or skill to properly outfit and battle successfully with the ship.

This all depends on how you have played previously. You will not reiceve a set ammount of
credits for a set ammount of exp. You will reiceve more or less credits depending on how
you do in battle, the types of ships you shoot, torps or guns, size of room (tonnage), if
you win/loose.. etc..

I hope this helps explain things a bit.
