  • DD/CL v's CL/CA...or why do I keep going back to my Sirius??

I was playing a few DD/CL games today and there was a gold bar Edin in a few of them,
which got me thinking.

I personally think that the Brit players have to make the biggest change in there playing
style when going from CL to CA compared to the other nations.

The Dido/Sirius/Edinburgh are outranged by nearly all the other CL's of similar levels,
basically turning them into overblown DD killers with a second job of smashing other CL's
that get too close. They all have near enough the same range and reload speed (until the
Edinburgh gets the dual 8"...which is crap until your gunners get into the 50's), and the
only real difference between them is how many guns they carry and how much armour they can
pile on. None of them are very suitable for playing in CL/CA games where you are going up
against ships that can flatten them before you even get into range to fire a single shot.
So basically you have very little incentive to get into CL/CA games.

The County comes along and your pretty much thrown in at the deep end against players from
other nations who were able to compete using a CL (or at least get enough hits in to make
it worth their while to stay) in CL/CA games and have more experience at it.

Let's face it, the reload from the 8" is almost twice that of the 6". And while the same
can be said of the other nations reload rates, we brit drives simply aren't used to it.
All our tactics have to change. No longer can we charge into combat and let our speed,
armour and guns protect us while dealing death to lesser ships...we have to actually sit
back and shoot at the enemy like...well, like gentlemen. It's just not cricket!!

But, once again we're faced with the problem of range. Even with the dual 8", the County
(which as I mentioned before, is still crap until you get into the 50's) is outranged by
every other CA out there. So, what do we do...we beat up on CL's (basically, the County is
to CL's what the Sirus is to DD's...or at least it would be, if the County had just a wee
bit more speed and wasn't size of a pregnant whale!).

But not only that, we get the added bonus of the fact that with such a long reload time on
our guns and the slower speed of our engines and that we're now the size of a pregnant
whale, DD's can actually become a real pain, especially since the introduction of the Z99,
L and DDX. And that doesn't even include the fact that we're now the first target of every
Dive Bomber in All Welcome rooms!

So what do we do about this?
Well the answer is brilliance...think about this for a minute...just stay in your Dido or
Sirius or Edinburgh!

Go on, you remember how much bloody fun it was beating up on those DD's and CL's that got
just that little bit too close! The satisfaction of taking on a flotilla of DD's and
sinking every last one. Cornering that elusive MPRO that had been sniping at you for half
a map and blasting him to itty bitty pieces. Now imagine that but with your gold bar
gunners firing spreads so tight that you'd swear that they were block shots...ahhhh.
But most of all, showing those uppity CL wannabe Z99s just what a real ship can do and not
some figment of a developers imagination.

I've played CL/CA games, and quite frankly they are bloody boring, slow, monotonous slug
fests where half the time you can't even see your opponent if you loose your scouts and
the other half you are hoping that the other team is concentrating on the Hipper your next
too so you can actually get into range and hit something.

But DD/CL games...they're exciting, fast and thrilling. You get up close with the enemy,
look him in the eye and shove a 6" shell right into it (or if you are in a Sirius with
Gold bar gunners, 10 6" shells!)

You're no longer a high priority target for CV's so you can actually have fun again in the
All Welcome rooms without spending 90% of your time hoping you actually hit those DB's
with your flack before they ruin you nice shiny deck.

The British Light Cruiser is the best Light Cruiser in Navyfield. Forget about those big
and slow Heavy ships with reloads that take so long you actually have time to go to the
toilet between shots. Get into a ship that's fun.

We really need a quote function on this forum...oh well.

Anyway, just to clarify one thing, the original post was pretty much in jest...but anyway =-)

>>If you want to be a DD killer all your life fine... stay in your Sirus... but when you
hit

transition

Quite possibly. I'm close to Lv50 on my Edin route BO and just hit Lv40 on my York
route BO. Both have spent most of their careers in the Sirius, because to be honest,
I really do like that boat.
I will obviously continue to move them along their routes, buying the ships that
come a long and maybe I'll find a BC/BB that I actually like, maybe not. But I'm not all
that bothered.

>>1, The XP penalty... if you're CA level you should be in a CA... otherwise you start
>>losing XP

While this is very true, it isn't a major problem as it has allowed me to train up the
following:
2x Gunners (who are just hitting Lv38 and were originally to replace my 9/10 9/9
stat Lv47 Gunners! But since those guys have been with me since the beginning, I
still use them)
3x Restorers
3x Repairers
2x Engineers
3x Pilots (currently, with another 3 neutrals waiting for their turn)
1x BO (powerleveling for CV Route and just hitting Lv20)
1x 2nd Seaman (I also plan on raising up another at some point).

>>2, DDs are worth diddly squat you have to sink the best part of a dozen DDs to
>>make the same XP that putting under an Admiral Hipper makes you...

True, but it's also more fun (IMO) sinking a load of ships whether they are DD or CL
in one game than sinking maybe 2 if you are lucky in a CL/CA/BB game even if the XP
is less.

>>3, I don't know about you... but by the time I hit level 42 I was pulling my hair out

Ahh, but I don't armour whore and haven't since my original Q days. Plus, DD/CL
games have their own strategy just the same as the bigger ships...plus as I stated
earlier, I find CA/CA games to be just a bit boring and slow.

>>4, To grow... you really need to experiance what the game has to offer...
amazingly,
>>theres more to it all than just armour whoring your slow ass little bath tub up and

Once again, the assumption that I armour whore...I don't. I also don't go for
broadside to broadside close range combat as much as I used to. Funnily enough,
good gunners, with the 6"/45 L and Normal Shells can quite easily range most CL1's
and some CL2's. With Light Shells, I can quite comfortably play tag with an MPro as
long as it isn't a stern chase.

>>5, Big boys play in big boats... do you want to be a big boy? :p

Hehe...

>>(CA user who once plated 7" of belt onto his Sirus)

Sirius user who only has 2.5" of belt =-)

County can be configured for taking on DD's (6" triples 6 binds of ammo and 8-10"
belt depending on level) if you want and as a big target the DD's actually all come
towards you so you dont have to worry about finding the little buggers and because
your still using those same guns you dont have much of a learning curve

If you want to be a DD killer all your life fine... stay in your Sirus... but when you hit
level 5x and start feeling the BB/C itch you're going to have one screaming transition
from 2/3 second reloading 6" guns to 14+" guns that take the best part of 20
seconds to reload...

Advantages of getting your arse out out of your Sirus and into the boat you're
supposed to be in:

1, The XP penalty... if you're CA level you should be in a CA... otherwise you start
losing XP

2, DDs are worth diddly squat you have to sink the best part of a dozen DDs to
make the same XP that putting under an Admiral Hipper makes you...

3, I don't know about you... but by the time I hit level 42 I was pulling my hair out
from the boredom of "rush, grapple, shoot, shoot, shoot, rush, grapple, shoot..." AW
Sirus play is almost the same everytime... I think if you macroed a game in a Sirus 2
out of 3 games you'd come out having not made neg XP...

4, To grow... you really need to experiance what the game has to offer... amazingly,
theres more to it all than just armour whoring your slow ass little bath tub up and
grappling it to the side of some unfortunate little sod and humping him to death...

5, Big boys play in big boats... do you want to be a big boy? :p

The County's twin 8's aren't range guns at all. The whole raison d'etre of the twin 8's
is to HA, AKA plunking down 900+ point deck shots.

I like CL/CAs myself, it's just a whole different game

Hey now, i have to say I love my county... I personally have nothing wrong with it... Just
get high enough level gunners and pile on a good mill's worth of armor and ur set

york is pretty good in cl/ca though right?

is the edin better or worse than the sirius vs dd's?

i'm planning on going down the edin line, but i'm not keen on using the county, not
because of it's stats, but because it's so ugly!
