  • Best IJN Armor - 2010

    01. 28. 2010 01:07

SirAlden
Hello all, thanks for all the help and comments,
in my last post Best IJN AA Ship - 2010.

I would like to turn our attention to IJN Armor or Lack of same.
Read all the Forums, have gotten differing opinions - views.

This is how I would like to frame the question.

"IJN needs speed first and formost, do you ever Armor IJN,
and on what ship or ship type".

Added Until there is a 1 Knt LOSS of Speed:
1) 0.2 Belt to reduce Torp Damage
2) 0.5 Belt
3) Bulge to reduce Torp Damage
4) Bulkhead instead of Bulge to do what exactly?
Does it increase OVERHEAT TIME, or KEEP Sailors from
DYING, or helps with ship top speed after being damaged?
Strength of ship?
5) 0.2 Deck

I usually do 1) 0.2 and 3) Bulge
Some are arguing for 1) and 4)
Seen 1), 4), 5).

Thanks all.

2 gun fuso is also called an asama lol.

seriously thing is, you bounce Iowa shell, deal 5k with your 2 guns, eat a wave of AP, see
ya later, direct ticket to the ocean floor.

the trick with ship managing to AW is keeping enough firepower to actually still be a
threat. Also that firepower must come with a usable spread, so its why Sodak isnt
considered a good AW ship on the USN line (spread issues), and why IJN ships also dont
armor, other than the fact the armor is crap and heavy. The UK PoW block spread and L1
tight spread makes them good candidate for AW on another side.

0.3 belt (always got told .2 is for every nation except IJN)
1 bulk, seems to help with splash damage ( and I have been told it by various people)
bulge till you lose a knt then take off one so you get that knt back.

Myoko/Mogami 1941/Kongo belt whored is hella fun. Just put 3 (or two for kongo) of the 3.9" A and add belt. I
got to about 14" belt on it, whic bounces 6". Really fun in blitz.

2 gun fuso also has merit, can get around 10-12" deck which partially blocks Iowa shells

1) and 3).

Bulkhead, is mainly useless. The reason is it allows you to keep your OH at lower DPs (if
you want, you take more damage before having your engine "damaged") but its extremely
heavy, so it also, to be efficient lower your max OH. That makes it useless at higher
level. Also, it wont make you save your OH for that more. maybe a hit difference (thast at
lower level. Talking blizt even)

At higher level, its even more ridiculous. SD makes it that if you lost your OH, then you
are an FF hit away from dying,

the 0.2 belt was tested, and it proved it gives 50% torp reduction damage, and that after
it, the increase of belt wasn't worth it, as it was about the same damage taken. look for
emu87 testing, I,m sure they are somewhere in the forum, maybe in tips and tactic.

No IJN ship are worthy to be armored in my mind, but some says that 2 gun AW SY is decent.
I just prefer mine with 42 knot and all 3 gun. I'm not a AW style player either.

Very clear.

What if you can go 0.5 Belt with 2 Bulge in a GB Room with 8 Kitas - OR
0.2 Belt with 14 Bulge

How can you know which protects you more from Torp Damage?

So far - NO DECK EVER on IJN

- 0.2 Belt and Bulge - or 0.2 and Bulkhead if you see low Torp Threat.

- Maybe BELT AWhoring with Upper BBs with 4 Great Engines.

IJN has armor?

0.2" of belt causes the most noticeable decrease in torpedo damage. 0.5" usually is
negligible unless you really hate torpedoes.

I always use 1) and 3)
0.5 belt seems too heavy and didn't help .
IJN ship don't have enough displamnt to put enough bulkhead keep OH abillity
effectly .
Some said 0.2 deck will reduse crew death rate , but it's depend on luck .

But I saw some Yamato / SY run as "Belt Armor Whole ."
Monty's 16" gun belt shoot bounced at 10-15 angle .
It may be fun , i'll try if my engineers grow up .

I like using bulk head, if not loosing speed.
A lot of situations where I avoided getting sunk and find time to repair.

The only effect of bulkhead that I've seen verified is a (sadly small) increase in the
amount of damage you can take before being crippled/losing OH ability.

I haven't been playing much IJN lately, but would go like this:

GB Capital ship or sub hunter: 1 and 3.
GB AA ship: 1 and either 3 or 4 depending on my mood/what seems more dangerous.
GB TWCL: 4, on the off chance it'll let me keep moving a bit longer.
Normal Room: 4 (unless for some reason I'm expecting to be hit by torpedoes)
FF/DD: 1 and 3, assuming I have the displacement. (Unlikely in IJN)
Blitz: Varies between 1&3 and 1&4, depending on the ship/what ranges I'm able to engage
at. (4 is more useful only if I can stay back from the torpedoes.)
