  • The CV1 Survival guide

The CV guide is a great guide, but I wanted to offer some pointers for CV1's. Why?

Because not all CV's are the same. In fact, of all classes of ships, I believe that the
aircraft carrier gets crammed into the strangest class. There is no 'escort' carrier
class, but in reality the roles of the carriers in the game vary widely.

The Pros of having a CV1:

Probably the biggest advantage of a CV1 is that nobody expects much of them.
However, they can be effective if used properly. Some of the best things a CV1 can
do with its resources:

-Shoot down enemy scouts
-Scout using its own scouts
-Sink torp whores
-Sink low to mid-level ships
-Provide fighter cover for BBs and other CVs

The cons of having a CV1:

One of the biggest cons is cost. You jump from having an all-round ship (CA) to the
worst carrier of your nation. It can be kind of a rude shock, and not only that, but
they often cost almost double the previous ship did.

Another downside is plane space. Some people might say launch capacity or crew
slots, but I think plane space is the worst. Why? Because often most CV1s also have
appriopriate-level pilots. Against any decent enemy AAW or fighter cover, your
planes WILL get shot down. More than anyone else, losing planes hurts a CV1 the
most. This also makes your ration of Fighters-Dive Bombers-Torpedo Bombers rather
tricky.

For many CV1s, speed is another weakness. I know in a Bogue, I cannot depend on
its maneuverability to save me. In fact, the speed is so inferior that not only am I an
easy target for dive bombers, but I tend to lag behind fellow cvs. This is probably
the biggest liability of a CV1. Speed is life, and beyond your limited CAP, there is
precious little to keep you afloat against enemy bombers.

In the face of all these disadvantages, many people that are powerleveling a BO to
use a CV often just skip the CV1 outright. After all, who wants to constantly run out
of planes and get sunk by only 2-3 dive bombers? Personally, I think it is a mistake
to skip this valueable step. I believe CV1s are EXCELLENT practice for being a great
CV driver, because you have to work so hard to compensate for your disadvantages.
You have to play up your strengths while covering your weaknesses. Some ways
I've found to compensate:

1.) Cluster! If there are bogues/attackers/hoshos on your team, stick together. One
CV1 is food, but by staying near each other, the CVs can benefit from overlapping
fighter coverage. Since CV1s carry so few planes and all but KM CV1 lack guns,
making the most out of fighters is a MUST.

2.) If you are a CV2/3, don't let your Chibi CV get left behind. he can help keep you
alive with fighter cover. Typically I try to follow bigger CVs around and enjoy mutual
protection- enemy planes typically target them over me, which makes it easier to
stay alive while protecting my bigger brother.

3.) Your planes are more susceptible to AAW than a CV3/4, and you have less to
spare. Therefore, rather than sending them on suicide missions against enemy BBs,
either attack torping DDs/CLs by yourself or help a bigger CV tackle a BB. One trick I
learned that works well is to have a group of 3 or 4 torpedo bombers on 'standby'.
When the yorktown I'm following launches planes, I launch mine and simply follow
his planes. Generally his planes are more robust and can survive enemy attack.
Typically, fighters will engage his first as well.

4.) Another thing you can do from a teamwork-perspective is to send fighters AHEAD
of another friendly CVs bombers. Granted your fighters will probably lose out, but
you benefit your CV teammates by clearing a path for their bombers. This works well
in GBII where winning is more crucial than simply doing lots of damage.

some retort for the previous post, i'm not denying anything you say is true. but as all
sayings go, there's always two sides to the coin:

curiousity killed the cat....satisfaction brought him back.

1. Bomb BB and CVs.

better to kill a target then lose all ur planes in a pointless effort.
emden's are best torped from a distance anyway, and will help aid ur other cvs.
bb's can one shot dd's, but usually spend a few shots bringing their guns to bear and
getting their range in. bb's should not be targetting dd's or cl's.
taking out the enemy kita torper at the start of the game can be a vital tactical maneuvere.

2. Use DBs as your main anti-ship plane.

db's and tb's have their own strengths and weaknesses. bombers are best with 2 sets of pilots.
2 tb's criss-crossing torps is harder to avoid. 2 db squads one after the other, get thru
flak alot easier, and fighter wings will chase one group and let the other thru.
as UK u won't have much option towards DB's till much later, and these are poor at best.
hence this is easy to say, but with UK, u won't get DB's till ur fighters are almost at t2
and u're on ur CV2/3
i think u say this because of point 1.
u think cv's and bb's should be ur target. and these ships are best targetted by DB's
cl/ca/dd are best targetted by TB's

tho' in point four u do go into the use of TB's for AA ships, so i feel u must agree with
my points somewhat.

3. Pick DB targets carefully.

this i don't think can be argued. don't bang ur head against a wall when u can simply go
around, over or under.

to add, don't always take the direct route. pay attention to loopholes in the fighter screen.
and if ur opponents are savy, don't take the direct route back if u can avoid it, if u're
the last CV, they're going to be following those planes right back to u.

Today I was AAW-ing with my Z99 and Emden and fell for the same trick twice; it was by the
same kind of bombers, so I assume it was the same driver. Anyways a flight of bombers was
approaching, but before I could flak them they dropped to sea level. So I lowered my
guns, since I'm still decent at shooting TB-ers. However just as I let loose my first
burst the bombers climbed again, closed, and divebombed me before I could react and get my
guns back up again. It was an excellent feint, and I applaud whoever pulled it up.

Some advice for CV1 drivers:

1. Bomb BB and CVs. You are now in a capital ship. Your job is to bomb other capital
ships. CL and CA may be easy targets but your team's BB can easily one shot them
from a safe range so they are generally not worthy of your time.

2. Use DBs as your main anti-ship plane. TBs are brutal at high level (particularly for
the Allied nations) but lower tier TB with noob pilots are easily shot down during
their run. You can of course drop the fishes from futher out but that will decrease
the chance of them connecting. On top of that capital ships (IE, your targets, see tip
1) generally have heaps of bulge which will require dozens of hits from your wimpy
tier 1 plane torps before you can do real damage to them.

3. Pick DB targets carefully. See that H44 with 14 KM40 that can and will throw up a
solid wall of flak? That's a no-go target unless you really know what you're doing.
Suciding your limited stock of DB into walls of flak is not brave, it's stupid and it hurts
you and your team. Stay clear of high level AAers in Atlanta & co, AA Brook,
Pensacola, Moltke, H39, H44, Iowa, Montana, Yamato, Super Yamato, Emden and
Utah. Instead bomb important targets with low AA defense like for example any
unescorted RN BB, unescorted IJN BB other than Yammy + Super Yammy. KM and
USN BB1 & 2

4. If situration calls for you to bomb ships with heavy AA defense, player smarter
instead of harder. Use TB for AA CL is a good idea, have ur TBs go to sea level from
WAAY out. Most AAer have problem with low flying planes so you should have a shot
at them. (note, don't bother with this against Cubone, I tried, doesn't work on him).
If DB is the way to go, have ur DBs go in by following someone else's DB. Don't
follow exactly behind, you don't wanna take flak intended for the other guy. Follow
him in but at a slightly different angle. As a CV1 you can't afford to loose many DBs.
Where as a bigger CV can afford to loose alot more. If the leading DB group comes
from a bigger CV on your team, then it is better for the team to have the big CV
loose a few DBs (which won't affect his fighting effectiveness) than for you to run
out of DB and be useless except for fighter cover. If the leading group is from
another CV1, then team wise it make no difference, so better him than you.

yeah this is good, i have an attacker and im gettin very good at torpbombin,

one time i sank a fubuki, a kagero TW, a Kita, a Kuma-kai and the best for last, 1 FF
XD

but yeah, the cons of CV1s is the manuverablity is bad, same to speed, lack of
space, costs twice as much, oh and don't forget, lack of space for armorin (look at
the displacement differences between a BB and a CV)
