It usually takes 2-3 shots if not more and by then if the bb hasn't killed the dd/cl/ca then that bb should uninstall

Learn to sink those smaller ships coming in at your "better ship".....pesky problem near alleviated.

ca/bb got range, dd/cl need to be close for able to land a good salvo, ca/bb just need to hit it far away when ca/bb see it coming near run back away for a bit and shot back at it until it is sunk/crippled/ or gave up hh on you

Fixing prem HH is easy. Make them more limited in range just like the real world version. Have them fire larger pattern. Require they actually make a contact hit. Like the real world. Make them useless until they are in water. In other words make HH work like they are supposed to and not like a MEGA depth charge thrower.

We're not in real life simulation game.

Consider it a reward for the small ship for managing to get close enough :)

Personally I find the phh setups rather fun :)
