As others have said, the Vanguard plays like a KM ship, which means it has minimal margin for error and needs both a good crew and skilled driver to run effectively. Your best bet is to let the enemy come to you, then fire and run, hoping they chase. If they don't, move back just out of their range and try to entice them to rush again. Otherwise, only move in when you know ALL nearby opponents are either blind or distracted - you don't have the firepower or accuracy to chase them down effectively. Most importantly, never get into a slugging match if you can avoid one.
But again, most of this comes from skill and experience: knowing when to do attack, when to run, knowing your angles, and husbanding your overheat for when its really needed. This is very different from the "F" -> "space" style of most other UK ships.
