What type and how much armor should I have on my Scharhorst?

0.2" belt and some bulge (try to keep going with at least 24 cruise speed so don't add too much bulge)

Forget about deck since only a select few KM ships can get enough deck armor to bounce anything (those being Gneisenau, Opro and H44).

With any nation, you're looking at a minimum of 8" of deck to be able to bounce enough to be relevant, and being KM, it's more like 9"+ to be of any use. It's doable on a handful of ships, especially if you use lower tier guns or go with reduced turret count, but except for the lolz, the tradeoff in speed is not worth it. You'll still die way too easily.

Armor on KM ships is unfort. worthless. All it will do it make you die in 2 salvos instead of 1. At some point hopefully SDE will make it so KM ships don't sink when a fly lands on them. It is rediculous how much weaker KM ships are to every other  nation. Add to that horrible shell damage and you get paper ships that can't cause anywhere near the same damage as other nations.

Sure scharnhorst sucks, but its a good damn BB1. What do you expect? All BB1s are bad and i would recommend everyone to use PCAs (and those CAs with as many support slots as BB1s) over using the BB1.
Furthermore the durability of KM ships is just slightly worse then other nations. But overall they definetly rank amoung the top ones.
The BB1 and 2 can do 50knots with 3 turrets. No other nations is that fast. Those 15inch duals for the BB2s do decent damage, have a really fair spread and good reload. Though the range is medicore for a KM ship. If you were referring to those 11inch" trip L guns (lvl 63) you sure dont know what you are talking about. Sure damage and spread suck. But did you ever checked the range? It outranges all BB1-3 and ranges the Lion1. Even the Bismarck 15inch duals get outranged by a tiny bit by those 11inch monsters.
The BB3s of KM are really great, they evenare a bit OP. (I should mention that i dont consider RM BB 1-3 as balanced, becasue they aren't. They are completely OP for BB3s)
The BB4 is a monster. Average score during 11 Fleet league Matches was 150k. At least none of my fleetmates got close to that with a Stalin or Lion1. Just learn to play if you fail in H39. Though i admit there is a hugh difference between at lvl and high lvl crew. But thats for all nations.
The BB5 especially after the latest patch is really great. I love it but please tell me what botheres you about it? Awesome to sling. Still big enough range advantage (though its tiny) to push any other BB5. As good durability as all other BB5s. Good spread(for KM). After patch it got solid damage and useable AP. 
Well the BB6. I admit it isn't well suited for GB and has issues with damage consisty and its AP is from hell. But still in a big BB1-6/all welcome or Harbour assault its almost a godmode. 

Though i agree that KM armor isn't worth it. Though in fact, KM is the only nation beside UK, that have actuall usealbe AW setups. There are 3 AW setups worth trying. Thats OPro2 with 2x trip15inch L guns and as much deck as possible or the BB2s with 2 11inch L trips and as much deck as possible (but to be effective especially the BB2s lack punch).

So the regular setup, as for basicly all nations is:
0.2 Belt and as much bulge to not lose speed. Though you may try using bulk instead of bulgge without losing speed. Especially recommend for rooms without many torpedos.

Infact the number of usefull AW able ships is low. They are:
QV, 2 guns Lion2, 2 and 3 guns Lion1, Nelly (especially with 3x 15inch duals), 2 gun POW+KGV. There exsist some strange other setups (e.g. 2 or 3 gunned monty) but neither i can really recommend them nor are they often used.
