Ok now so whats the best way of classing aa gunners base 10-11 not boosted to be good at aa while also being able to use regular guns? (ie hh etc)

most USN ships, unlike other nations, have T slots big enough to fit "normal" guns as AA guns. So whereas some nations are forced to class AA because the normal guns take too much space, US can use the guns you have on DDs and CLs at lvl 20-30 in their T slots on bigger ships.

Just find the guns that have a high max angle, good reload, and pick AA shells you should be fine.

Arrgh
The best guns not restricted to AA use only for USN are:

For Pensacola, and most DD's.

3"/70 cal mark 23 N or D or the 5"/38 cal mark 38 N or D

For CL's and CA's with enough gun space.

6"/ 47 DP cal mark 16 N or D

its not so much as they can't have the space for normal gun, but in IJN and KM case, the dedicated AA guns the AA gunners (DP and Rapid fire respectively) unlocks are extremely superior AA wise.

For UK, its a weight issue of the normal gun, and the pom poms are apparently fun to use. The AA patch also, from what I gathered from richardphat and other UK player who uses them, made them pretty efficient.

Now as far as US go:

The A guns are just not worth it. Patch somewhat fixed them I heard, but you still have guns that are basically D or under range with good rld.

And the AA gunners mean they gotta stay armory till really high level or you get massive ability nerf.

Now since you say AA gunners, I'm gathering you have main gunners already, and that you dont especially need them to use normal guns, but would still be fun for PHH or something.

You COULD do rld acc rld. But I dont think its very necessary since you are really aiming at a better reload, and fast. Also the AA guns are lower level, so at lvl 60-65 even if not acc-capped or BVEd you get a decent spread out of them. So I'm going with phantom's suggestion of reload-reload-reload.

I'd just like to ammend a bit argh's gun suggestion : Most people actually use the 5/38 mk 38 Ls, since they offer a slight bit more range than the 3/70 mk23 N.

The 6/47 are scout snipers. Fun, but I wouldnt call them as efficient as the 3/70 N or 5/38 mk38 Ls. They do have the best range out of USN AA guns, and awesome hitting power. However you'd only have time for one shot at a fighter squad going toward you before they leave your GA zone. In term of DPS also, both the 3/70 and 5/38 pwns them.

A good ship for low level AA is probably the omaha with 3/70Ns. They are easier on the gunners at lower levels.

DO NOT use the 5/54 mk16 set, even if the range seems nice. Those guns are meant for HAW (high angling firing). They have crap AA damage per shell. If you want to shoot 4 time at a each fighter before it goes down, be my guest then.

I've used a pair of Rel-Rel-Rel gunners for my AA for a long time. Never had a chance to use actual AA classed gunners, but so far I've been happy with them.

My favorite gun is the 3" /70 Ns. Great reload, nice damage, and distance is just about as good as you're gonna get short of the 6" duals (which are pretty slow).

I've tried other guns, but I keep coming back to the 3" /70 Ns. They just seem to do what the other guns won't.

True, forgot about those... and the reload is tolerable at higher lvls too.

Its pretty much that the 3/70 Ns are better in average than the 5/38 N or Ds. The rld difference is enough to offset the slightly more power the 5"/38 got.

If you couple that the reload difference lessen a lot once you got the reload cap, that the spread is actually similar on both, and that the 5/38 mk 38 Ls got a hair more range at higher level however, they do are quite interesting to replace the 3/70.

The bulk of the people I know use the 3/70 Ns as opposed to the 5/38s. (the exception being using the 5s on the r slots of clevelands/brooks/etc. In situations where CVs are changing their altitudes, the faster reload outweighs the damage output of the 5s. Unless they are flying their planes directly at you as they lower their altitute you will be changing angles, take advantage of the faster reload.
