World War II U-Boat Found With Skeletons

Nov. 23, 2013

Researchers have apparently discovered the remains of a World War II-era German U-boat and the skeletons of its crew off the coast of Indonesia. Experts say it's an unprecedented find that could provide insight into how the war was fought in the South West Pacific theater.

The first inspection uncovered binoculars, batteries and dinner plates emblazoned with swastikas, according to an AFP report printed by the newspaper The Star on Thursday. There were also reportedly 17 human skeletons buried in the wreckage, and more bones may yet be discovered.

"This is the first time we have found a foreign submarine from the war in our waters," said Bambang Budi Utomo, head of the research team at the National Archeology Center that found the vessel off the coast of Java. "This is an extraordinary find that will certainly provide useful information about what took place in the Java Sea during World War II."

The researchers believe the wreck is that of the U-168, which German naval forces used to successfully sink several allied ships. The U-boat was eventually torpedoed by a Dutch submarine while en route to Australia. According to a report by German newspaper Die Welt, the Dutch vessel fired six torpedos from 900 meters, but only one of the explosives detonated. Twenty-three German sailors reportedly died in the attack, and the captain and 26 crew members survived.

The daily Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that the wreck could also be that of the U-183, which was sunk on April 23, 1945 in the Java Sea. That attack had only one surivor of 55 men on board.

Both of the U-boats were part of Nazi Germany's "Monsoon Group," which attacked allied ships in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.

Dedication
Application
Appreciation

Is it really a Long way to Temporary?

Remember, it was a Japanese turtle sub (mini) that scouted the Pearl, but it was carried by boat most of the way.

I have some info from kaskus. U-boat type IXC-40, Captain - Helmuth Pitch, POW then returned to German. Long Road to Java. 1st Patrol, U-168 sailed out from Kiel in 3rd March 1943, to Kattegat and Skaggerak along the coast line of Norwe. Passed between Iceland and Faroe Islands, U-168 entered Atlantic ocean and south-west of Greenland. Reached Lorient, France in 18th May on the same year. 2nd Patrol, headed to Hindia Ocean sunking SS Haiching about 130 kms south-west of Mumbai (India) in 2nd October 1943. Ended in Penang, Malaysia in 11th November. 3rd Patrol, U-168 sailed from Penang in 7th February 1944. Sunking HMS Salviking south of Srilanka in 14th November. Grece Epaminondas Embiricos 210 kms north of Maladewa. Damaging Norwegian Fenris, but she's out of torps. 4th Patrol, Raid in Java Sea, began in 5th October 1944, she left Batavia (now Jakarta). Early morning 6th October 1944, torpedoed by Netherland Hn.Ms. Zwaardvisch (P-322) a T class submarine, and sunk near Karimunjawa, north of Semarang (Central Java). Sry for my bad english.

Actually 11 subs was sent for the mission, but only half (4-5 im not sure) reached India.

From there they used Japan docks, and had difficulties maintaining/repairing and loading torps.

So, the Mine Lands map and the Hunters map makes for some good South Pacific NF action then? Quite obviously the island maps were a great idea for that aspect of naval warfare and inclusion into this game format.
