You still need 2 for SS 1-4 tho, ofc you can be a front-torp-only sub from day 1 but you will have rather bad time with fighting other SS.

IX-D2 and XXI are really two different beasts, I suggest you to still train two torpedo men. The reason for that is because, SS vs SS is what KM is best at, handicap your self with only the four frontal torpedo from SS1~5 is not worth it. 

Type-XXI, even though I never played one, I can see its niche, with all six of the tube focus in the front while equipped with the fastest and the most deadly proxy torps. XXI serves the sole purpose of laying waste to high tier BBs and any subs that dare to face it head on. But a type XXI that got ambushed from behind is pretty much a dead XXI.

Whether or not you want to be a traditional KM sub player with the IX-D2 or try out a hybrid of IJN and KM like the XXI, is completely up to you.

When you need rear torps on a KM proxi sub your doing something wrong.

You should use 2 torpers for the KM SS5. 1 torper is required for the KM SS5.5. I'd keep leveling that second torper though. SDE does plan to come out with Premium SS's and SS6's.

well i am enjoying the km ss5 even thou i am no good at ss vs ss but i love the proxys im unsure about ss5.5 but i know its deadly but it weak when you reach its behind uhm about the PSS or ESS look at the nf kr server they have them currently apparrantly the subs on there are alot more balanced then here or just less whiners then we do here
