• For those asking about new GUIDELINE thing in dock

some have been asking about that new box which shows your gun range and guideline length data that was recently patched in and is now added to the ships auxillary data display bars in the dockyard screen as a utility that allows you see both your main gun max range and the bo sightlinge length while at the ship in its dockspace .. part of the SHIP info tab above waitlist area lower right long box  ...

what it is ? .. and whats it for ?? ..

this is a tool for trimming your bo guideline lengths without having to repeatedly leave harbor and do a mission room or play a game to check your new line trim results .. you now get the number shown in dock .. makes the adjustments that much easier and faster - simpler too ...

and for those still confused as to wth thats talking about ... the old method is outlined below :
A word about the Length of Guidelines
While talking about Guidelines: The better your Bridge Operator becomes in terms of CrewSize, Skill and amount of Experts/Veterans, the longer will your Guidelines become! The FCS of a ship also influences their length.

So, don't be confused if the memorised angle to hit the end of your Guidelines is different all of a sudden, it might just be due to your BO leveling up and becoming better!

At high levels, the Guidelines will become much longer than the actual range of the guns. Since Guidelines longer than your maximum range are of no use and just distract you while aiming, you should try to keep the Guidelines' ends at just about even with your maximum gun range.

You may already be familiar with the flip side of this aspect of BO sight lines where a lower level BO can not spot his shells if the gun outranges his vision ability. Adding more experts and vets will increase this ability in your BO and help lengthen the distance slightly. Leveling up also increases the growth of this ability. some even premium boost their BO's to gain sight distance - this can become a counter productive issue at higher levels requiring the trimming of recruits off your bo (read on for details).
CAUTION: Speed leveling BO's has a negative effect on sight lines since its reducing the growth of vision ability stat. Only spd lvl APA or SS or CV BO's. Some players (who understand the trade-offs issues and how to compensate for them) do spd/lvl BB/BC 2nd line bo's - but then for gunship use they will then generally require being boosted and vetted somewhat just to make them merely adequate to sighline the big guns they pwr lvl'd up to. As for normal grind main gunship bb/bc bo's and for all ss cv or apa bo's, many will tell you not to waste any boost on your BO's as it usually causes annoying freaky long gun lines later on and if over-vetted is then also difficult to try to trim down.

There are two factors which affect the length of your Guidelines:

* The FCS on a ship
* The BO on a ship

What you need to achieve is to shorten the Guidelines down to the length where the shells of your longest-ranged main guns impact that the end of your Guidelines.

For this, do not switch to a worse FCS! .. TRIM your BO instead - do this by reducing recruits (see steps below)

While the FCS of a ship influences their length, it also influences the spread of your guns (unlike the BO), so you should not switch to a weaker FCS since your spread would suffer then. Because of this, the only way would be to weaken the BO to have your main ship's (probably your highest-level BB) Guidelines fit the range of its guns.

To weaken your BO , it is the best to decrease the amount of Recruits on your BO, maybe even to zero, if necessary.

Decrease them step-by-step, and keep checking the length of your Guidelines in respect to your maximum range.

If this alone is not sufficient, you will have to kill some Experts by failing at some Veteran Conversions, keep checking the length as you go step-by-step as well.

Do not 'weaken' your BO too much! While you can just refill Recruits, Experts take time to replace!

Just keep on weakening your BO little by little until your Guidelines are of optimal length. To check this, you play a game or just do a mission after each step of weakening.

Optimised Guidelines allow you to aim quickly and accurate.

Please note: The length of the Guidelines will then also decrease on all other ships that BO drives as well, so focusing on the Guidelines of your main ship will not only shorten the Guidelines on that ship, but on all. This is beneficial most of the time, however. (since your highest ship ususally has the longest ranged guns)

That's it for the theory! Remember, practice is what you need the most, practice and patience. Good luck!
its that ..trim>check..trim>check..trim>check..oops>buff>check..play....cycle that gets eliminated
the new range/sightline length display readout now lets you simply trim and look at the numbers change without needing to have to keep leaving the docks after each round of micro trim tweaks .. repeatedly ... its now trim and view and go play .... simpler faster and by the numbers - not by the seat of your pants and test fire to eyeball result as was the old method ..

It doesn't work correctly if you have a seaman onboard. The lines are way longer than what is says in the harbor when that is the case.

Why the hell are you copy and pasting one of Obst's Guides, adding some poorly colored text and then posting it in General Discussion?

To top it off, YOU NEVER CREDITED THE GUY WHO WROTE THE GUIDE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

This is no better than when darkfrost took the entire HA guide from trainworld.us, didn't bother crediting the author and claimed it as his own.

Second off, Guides go in Tips and Tactics.

In case he edits the topic:

nice to see you in peak form norm .... step back and dail your snark down a few notches please

to address your grumbles in order ..

1) posting because it is useful iformation ...
2) not crediting because where i got it from stated it was a re-post but did not list sources - so unknown until now .. apprently highly useful info keeps getting passed on and re-posted repeatedly .. now that you have so kindly informed of the actual original source - is now properly creditted (but not going to edit it here for that line - in case it breaks your quote set up) if i bother posting this one anywhere again it will have its credit on just like anything else i know a source for - so thank you for that one actually useful tidbit of information .. do note that i did clearly state it was a quote section and not claimed as my own as you seem to think i'm implying - derp
3) while darkfrost has breifly been in a fleet or two in the past while i was also but i don't think he posted this one - and its been years since where i first saw it went down - so as far as i was aware origin was lost in mists of time - until someone with knowledge and willing to share that knowledge posted - so thank you for filling in at least one of the many gaps - don't stop now - keep writing what you know for people who don't know to become enlightened as well - there's a lot of stuff that needs to be written for a general guide - i was asked to start assembling one - i do not claim to know everything and it will be up to people like you or at least people like obst who are willing to take time to share what they know for the rest of community to benefit from
4) the last time i posted what i thought was a tip and tactic thing - it got moved to general discussion .. so this time i started there .. if you been following the forums over the past years you might have noticed there is a wide variation in how which mods move or lock threads here .. its not always as clearly defined as probably could be
 5) you been snarky a lot lately .. care to share whats your problem ?

1.) Just because it is useful information, it gives you no right to post it without giving credit to the original author.

2.) Not listed sources? LOL

That is one of Obst's guides from literally one of the most important websites this community has avalible to it.

You've also confirmed you didn't both to even try to look for whom posted originally, also you've confirmed you had no intention of crediting the author in the first place.

3.) Every, single, guide, posted since the previous forum went up in 2006, are able to be located.

90% of the guides from before then are also reposted in the Old Forum Data and easily 1 search away from anyone willing to spend less than 2 minutes trying.

Especially ones hosted on nf-guides.com and trainworld.us

So don't pull bull with me, you never had any intention to credit the author.

The fact your not willing to edit you first quote to include credit where credit is due is a pure slap in the face to person who spent their time writing the original.

The general practice for if you don't know the author of the original work, is to mention you don't know who wrote it and immediently stating what part of the text is not your work.

4.) So basicly you have no understanding what is material that generates a "discussion" verses a guide.

5.) Snarky? I'm simply trying to prevent people like you from stealing other peoples work. Your the guy refusing to 1.) Attempt to find whom the author was in the first place. 2.) Click an edit button and add whom posted the original guide you've copy and pasted in its entirety.

He did use
, to me it was clear it was not all his own writing.

normpearii, im a noob but, exactly what's the gain?
TNF give olives to who make guide? don't think so

if the only gain is a pure virtual "thanks" than he reposted usefull info lost in the old data, i think a thanks is ok.

specially with GOOD guide should be posted very often with the skill level we have now, none will get hurt with a GOOD refresh!

To all of you.

Say you spend your valuable time making something.

Would not be annoyed someone didn't spend 2 seconds to find the original and give credit to you?

Would you honestly not care?

I can assure you anyone who's spent the significant amount of time as Obst has writing guides for this game he would be quite annoyed someone didn't spend the measly 2 seconds it took to find exactly where that text came from and at least credit him and those who assisted in the writing of the entire Manual Aiming guide that text is ripped from.

Whatzup

I would be glad my guide is still helping people, as that was the whole point of making that guide in the first place I think.

Well Obst missed a cookie... Still no reason to be so harsh on Dragon. You just could have send a PM and informed Dragon_Boats

Dragon tries to be helpful to our community in many ways and I appreciate his/her effort.

EDIT:

That you copypasted the post so he/she could not edit it ( your words) sounds like me you started a witch hunt. ( Taken your other reactions on Dragon's other posts in account)
