Well between using 0.2" of belt armour and bulge up to the point of losing a knot of speed, and not giving SS experience proportional to their attack, I'd say they're already in rough shape.
Subs only carry so many torpedoes. If you go after high-displacement targets, they invariably have belt and bulge armour. If you're able to defeat ASW efforts to reach those big ships, you've likely only got enough torpedoes to go after one or two capital ships--assuming you still have enough air to stay submerged.
How many ships can a battleship potentially sink with a full magazine of shells? There aren't many SS players bragging about how they get 100k+ personal attack every game.
