OK, I was laying down listening to music on my TV when I came accross a pretty good idea. Here it goes:
I was thinking that if we had a controller we could use, we would be able to have a little bit of a different gaming experience. It would probably similar to a Playstation 3 Controller or an Xbox 360 controller.
Here is what the button setup would be like. Just imagine it like a PS3 Controller for now.
I will put the corresponding key on the keyboard as well.
Please remember, I have put ALL kinds of thought into this and positive comments will be appreciated. I don't expect a bunch of trolling, just some ideas of what needs to be change.
This would also benefit NF as they would be able to produce a controller to sell to the NF public.

L2: Port All Turrets.  Q
R2. Starboard All Turrets.  E
L1. Gun Elevation Down.  W
R1. Gun Elevation Up.  S
Left Directional Button. Select Front Weapons.  Z
Right Directional Button. Select Rear Weapons.  C
Up Directional Button. Select All Weapons  X
Left Analog. Port Turrets and Starboard Turrets  A and D
Right Analog. Move the mouse.  Mouse
L3. TDA  Ctrl
R3. Right Click  Right Mouse Button
X. Fire Gun or Torpedo  Space
Square. Engine Accelerate.  F
O. Engine Decelerate.  V
Triangle. Precise Weapon Control  Shift
Start. Escape Button  ESC.
Select. Help/Controls F10

We would only need 3 more buttons. The placement would be A1 and B1 would be where the charger connects and A2 and B2 would be on back where you reset the controller.
I will call them A1; A2; B1; B2. A1 and B1 would be pressed by your pointer fingers, and A2 and B2would be pressed by your middle fingers.

A1. Select R Group  R
B1. Select T Group.  T
A2. Select A or B Armament. Y
B2. Select Firing Mode ( Max Velocity, Simultaneous, Gradual ) F4

This setup is mainly for Manual FCS and BB players.
Everything would be the same for Auto FCS except you wouldn't have the Turret controls and the left analog would be Left Click

Here is a setup for SS players:

L2: NONE
R2. NONE
L1. NONE
R1. Select Firing Mode ( Max Velocity, Simultaneous, Gradual ) F4
Left Directional Button. Select Front Weapons.  Z
Right Directional Button. Select Rear Weapons.  C
Up Directional Button. Select All Weapons  X
Left Analog. Port Turrets and Starboard Turrets  A and D
Right Analog. Move the mouse.  Mouse
L3. TDA  Ctrl
R3. Right Click  Right Mouse Button
X. Fire Gun or Torpedo  Space
Square. Engine Accelerate.  F
O. Engine Decelerate.  V
Triangle. Precise Weapon Control  Shift
Start. Escape Button  Esc
Select. Help/Controls  F10

A CV controller would probably have a far different setup and possibly just another controller.

Here is a basic idea on a CV controller. Please help me with this one because I'm not 100% sure on this one.
Again, just imagine a PS3 controller but with a few tweaks and the same controls as BBs.
Buttons 1-8 for each of the pilots where the start and select button are. 2 rows, 4 on top and 4 on bottom.
This controller would have even more buttons as a BB controller.

Again 4 more buttons. This time we will call them: C1; C2; D1; D2. Please give input for location on the controller.
C1. Raise Altitude
D1. Lower Altitude
C2. Dive Bombing
D2. Drop Bomb

why changes the controls for all when you can do it alone??
You know you can click f10 then chose which buttoms you want to use to controls for the ships right??

As Tomm said you can choose the controls yourselves in NavyFIELD, although do not know whether joystick buttons and controls are recognised through the F10? Even then take a look at Joy2Key or AutoHotKeys as they can allow you to transform an PC joystick or gamepad button press into an key press in your programs. I used Joy2Key very often in some flight sims and am now looking at AutoHotKeys that seems to have more functionality but requires you do so some coding yourself, Joy2Key is very simple to setup and get using but there is not as much functionality available.

I know that there are controller programs that you can use but I think it would be so much more simple for SDE to come out with a controller that worked with the game by itself and had all the buttons we would need. I have failed to find a controller with enough buttons to work for my play style.

I know it woudn't be a thing for all players but it would definate like for others. I know it would be good for me because I play PS3 almost as much as I play Computer.... If there are going to be any more comments please don't make it about 3rd party programs. My computer slows down a lot when I have other things such as video capture programs or whatever. I also can't find a controller that has enough inputs availabe for the amount of buttons we would need.

IN the event that this was remotely necessary,

Drop the functions for all D-pad buttons; Up becomes a toggle button, Left becomes a toggle, and right becomes a toggle, as does down. You would have no need for more butttons then.

Up directional: Toggle between All guns, front, and rear.
Left directional: Toggle Between R and T slots
Right directional: Toggles gun ammo lockers (A and B lockers)
Down directional: Firing modes

Simple, effective, and easy. As for the cv controls, it would take some new code (and therefore bugs) to implement the idea that i just pulled out of my rear, but it would work.

The start button would be changed to bring up the menu that the select button currently does, and you would reserve the select button for the control switch. Basically, it changes your control map from the normal ship to the plane controls and disables any of the ship functions from working until you press again to switch back, and with new coding you would no longer be required to drag a box around the squad you wanted (unless selecting more than one). Instead you just click once, like you would in many RTS's.

Under that system, the left and right sticks would still have their original functions (see proposed change to the original below) and left clicking your squad would select it. Then,

Up d-pad: Raise altiitude
Down d-pad: Lower altitude
Square: Press once, and the next left stick push will initiate manual dive-bombing with the place the cursor was at being the target.
Circle: Drop bombs (both auto and manual, TB and DB)
Right stick: moves squads, and when over an enemy ship initiates auto-bombing
Left stick: Selects squads

Last reccomendation: Make it so that the stick used for clicking is not the same as the one for moving the cursor. Its much harder to move and click the same stick at the same time. Ex: Moving left stick moves cursor, pushing right stick in would be a right click, pushing left would be left click (left clicks are IMO less common.).

Hope this helped you out, the buttons i suggested could be changed especially in the D-pad area on the first one.

I actually have software that came with my PS2-style USB controller that allows me to emulate key presses with it, so I could almost already do this with my $20 game-agnostic controller. The only thing stopping me is the need for mouse cursor movement. If there was a keyboard control for your ship's rudder, well, that would be another story.
