What do you mean by "more choice of types?" In WW2, there was only one type of metal all nations used for armor and that was steel. Adding in armor types or metal variants wouldn't make this into a "WW2" esque game anymore. Besides, if we added things like a variety of stronger alloys, rich QV drivers would be able to carry 3x more armor on their ship due to the weight going down. Plus NF would need to add additional AP rounds for all kinds of different armor types. I already run out of HE ammo frequently (thanks to my poor aim) but if NF added more different types of armor, they would need to add different types of ammo to compensate. We'd need more than two ammo slots and bigger R slots to put in more ammo.
