  • Torps going under ships

Can some one tell me why some of my torps are going underneath ships. Im a new SSdriver and finaly got close to a BB4 and fiered  all  tubes on his broadside. The aim was perfect but only 2/4 hit, they went on trough. Did i do something wrong or is it a glitch??

They were probably duds.

I've read (can't recall where) that the rough chance for a torpedo to dud is somewhere around 20-30%. Now, supposing it's as high as 30% the chance for all four to dud is less than 1%, and I have seen a glitch where certain players will see four or more of their torpedoes all go under their target frequently.

Worth noting is that KM torpedoes will detonate if they are close misses, so even if they "dud" they will have another chance to score a proximity hit behind the target. This makes their effective dud rate much lower than IJN, for example.

It's closer to 40% chance of duds, but otherwise, what he said.

Which is why everyone and their dog plays KM SS.

Ah, thanks for that. Been a while since I read the old forum's thread. Someone did a full analysis of it with stats, and there was a lot of conjecture on whether KM torpedoes had two or three chances to /not/ be a dud, depending on angle and how close they passed.

40% dud rate? today i was in my UK R type and fired 14 torps it it (6 front/2 rear/6 front) and 12 were dud 'go unders' . 2 exploded on contact and 4 caused minor damage after going under and exploding at max range.

then i run out of air and got owned.

isnt "going under" caused by firing to close by your target?

your sub is under the water if you fire, the torps arent imidiatly at the target ships depth

i look at it as a 2nd arming range (never really bothers me cos i play a VIIC atm)

so how would mine go under then do damage at max range?

i have UK, KM, IJN SS4 and us SS2 and the dud rate is (best>worst) KM>IJN>US>UK

No. going under is caused by a dud.. meaning just that, the torpedo was a too low of a depth for it to hit the ship's hull.. when you hear the torpedo bounce off the hull and not explode, that means you are too close

Well if you're /that/ close, your torpedoes might go clear under. In strict terms in the NF game engine, your torpedoes are spawned a little bit in front of your ship when you launch them, so if you're in very close, the spawn point may well be on the other side of the ship that's on top of your bow.

This. If you're too close (under the minimum arming range) it will still hit, there will just be no damage or explosion. That torpedo is just gone after that.

If they didn't have that neat little "dud" feature, then there would be howls of protest about overpowered subs.
