This problem seems to be mostly indigenous to Asia. My old principal from high school, his wife was Chinese and she used to tell us how big this issue was in China. Apparently it's so bad the Chinese Army set up special BOOT CAMPS to get these kids out of their PC chairs. (Although if it works it's a clever way to recruit. But I doubt they'll become good soldiers either). In Korea the issue exists as well, with SC2 and stuff like that. The only thing I can think of here in the US with such an effect is what I call 'World of Warcrack' (lol), but even there the cases of people holing up in their rooms for weeks to play are much fewer and further between, so to speak. And I'm not aware of any deaths from it either. Just rehab for some maniacs.
Also, I read the article, and yeah it doesn't seem so much to be the game. Apparently he had some sort of heart trouble(?? Feel free to correct me if it was some other disease) and didn't take his meds... Like the guy above me said, it seems to be an underlying health issue.
I wonder if there are any of these hardcore otaku's on NavyFIELD. The only thing I can come up with where you'd be up at odd hours without leaving your room is if you had a really exciting harbour assault. I've never gotten to do one, but it sounds crazy good, actually.
