So out of boredom I started a new ship line and leveled up to an APA just to see what it would could do. I'm not going to be in a HA anytime soon so its pretty much just collected dust. Meanwhile, during the event I've piled up a horde of mines like most everyone else. So what to do with these mines?

I propose minelayers! Most minelayers were somewhere between a DD and CL in size. Some were faster than others and they had a little bit of firepower to protect themselves. I propse that they be at L40 and listed as a CA (preventing their use with sonar) as that wasn't their role in the war. They would be placed on the ship tree after the APA so there would be a reason to keep moving down the line and something interesting to work for.  They would have CL style space capable of holding up to 6" guns and plenty of T slots for mine racks. In battle they would be somewhat similar to a kitna in that they would cover an area of the map with mines, but obvously not nearly as fast or dense.

I looked at what each country was using for minelayers during the war and found some interesting tidbits of information.

USS Terror: Had decent guns, was somewhat slow, but could take quite a beeting.

HMS Abdiel: Had powerful guns and good speed

MN Pluton: Was by far the fastest of the minelayers built on a cruiser hull but zero durabiltiy and sunk easy

KM Type UC II: The germans didn't have a minelayer, they relied on subs. This ship would be essentially an SS2.5 but with only two torpedo tubes and mines. Being a sub would just toss some more variety into the game.

USSR: Make an ARA and just load it up with two more T slots than the others. As their BBs are artillery platforms this thing would just be a mine laying beast: slowmoving but leaving a big field at once.

I applogize for the lack of pics. I don't know why they aren't coming up here. You can use the links to see the ships.

I know it's not the same... but level a Kita and load it with mines. Its a lot of fun :)

If you want to play a dedicated Minelayer, the Bogatyr and Pallada CL's in the Soviet line are probably the best in the game. with 8 launchers and ability to hold a reload each, plus two real R mounts, they fit the bill nicely.

The IJN torpedo ships are a close second, but they have so much more potential if they're using torpedoes instead.

In third place, the US Brooklyn CL. It has 8 launchers with no reloads, but it's R slots more than make up for this. Drop your mines and get on with the business of hunting smaller ships.

And mines in clusters do VASTLY more damage the more of them that hit. 1 mine is annoying, 5 mines in a tight group are lethal, even to large battleships. Squadrons of scout planes can use this to good advantage as well.

Great tips thanks!

*Edit*

I tried using a squad of scouts in a GB last night and sunk a DD and crippled two montys. So yes a cluster can do some damage!
