  • I am a veteran, like my father before me

The last four generations of my family have been in the United States military, either Navy or Marines.
I myself, did not have the priveledge of earning this award in my 20 years in the US Navy, and I am thankful for that.
The Purple Heart pictured was earned on  26 July, 1944 on the island of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands by my grandfather, who was 3rd Marines.

To all who have sacrificed and served, we are eternally in your debt.

My Dad is an 86 year old Marine that was in that divisionand. He and his amphibian tractor battalion, The 10th Amphibian Tractor Batttalion, got left by the 3rd on an island in the pacific. Later the 4th came by and picked them up. They never caught up with the 3rd and went on to make landings for the 4th division. He wrote a book about all of this entitled, Tales Of "A" Lost company, WWII US Marines.

Well that, plus I spent 20 years in military service myself. So you might understand where I would think that the idea of serving in the military is a good thing.

Whatever. Military personnel protect their countries regardless of what people think of their actions. At some point, you have to have a thick skin to criticism. If you don't like what your military is doing, blame a politician instead.

5th generation here (left Air Force after 12 years as a PJ) and my son, who joined the Marines two years ago, is 6th generation.

Thank you for your service, as with those in your family that served before you.

Thats always has been one of my favorite parts of NF, you run into a lot of guys who are currently in the service or prior service. I myself am 3rd gen in the army and 3rd gen building subs. There was an article in Time around veterans day about how only 1% of the US population is even related to someone in the service.
