With my Essex, I have 4 fighter pilots and 2 dive bombers. I basically play like a fighter whore and rarely load my dive bombers.
With 9 max to load, I fly 3 planes per pilot, and try to spread them out for max coverage for sight and to catch enemy scouts and bombers. I leave my pilots in the air until they run out of fuel. I very rarely run out of planes in GB. I do well if I can keep 3 pilots constantly in the air and refueling as soon as they go down out of fuel.
I get into trouble when I am micro managing my pilots to keep them away from higher level enemy pilots and AA. What happens is I get to busy trying to keep my pilots out of trouble that I don't stay on top of refueling and end up with no pilots in the air and all of them on deck refueling, where they are of no help to the BBs.
I think I do pretty well keeping an eye on the enemy BBs when I need to cover half the map. I have a real hard time when later in the game I have to cover the whole map. For example, I might do a good job covering the northern have, but if the southern half fails, I find it really hard to cover both halves.
