  • True effect of BO "potential" in SS

Given that the Sonarman's potential, not the BO's, provides submerged visibility .. and given that,
from what I have read, it is recommended to run a skeleton BO on SS(SN) .. is the potential stat
of your BO really then-that important?  That is, would it be better perhaps to make your SS BO
from a delay-classed elite repairman, similar to the strategy recommended for SS torpmen (a
post I read strongly advised using elite repairmen, and delay-classing until 44 .. supposedly hitting
the torpedo cap still eventually, while gaining a lot more repair)?

Bo skeletons or not depends. Most people will tell you to have a skeleton BO because of limit of displacement left.

Ironically, it is most of these people, that do not bother trimming their torpedoman since they are easy to cap. Trimming them, removes a huge amount of weight.

Now, if you were to delay an Ellite repairman as a torper, best advice is to class it in the late 100+  or 120 if you are hardcore. That's where you get an interesting repair effect.

If you're going to delay something, do it right, else, your crew won't be better than some class on time.

To what extent do people trim torpmen though, and does it adversely affect torpedo load?  Also, when you are speaking of trimmed torpedomen, I assume you mean dedicated torpedo-sailors? The repair stat of a trimmed sailor, I assume, would have little effect(?).  Being relatively early in the game (just got to Maxim Gorki with one crew, and haven't started levelling an SS crew apart from my sonarman), would the repair advantage of delay-classing still-be worth it?  Also, is the advantage of saving weight in crew manifested mainly in terms of more bulge, or more speed?

I guess there are many "types" of SS crews which I could manufacture, I am just trying to decide which would be best for the role I want mine to perform; nominally, that of a surface ship-hunter and/or rear-guard - less bent on sneaking through the enemy lines than on ambushing any trying to sneak around my team's flanks (the high speed and short arming-distance of SN torpedoes, I figure, would be well-suited to this sort of SS behaviour - rear-guarding also minimizing the liability of the early SS's limited underwater endurance).
