  • SS Vickers lack of submersion time & speed

New player.

BO with +13 Growth
2nd planesman with +13 air supply
2nd engineer wit +23 ENG
2nd Sonar with +16 sonar
Heavy Torp with +26 Torp
And I have the deck gun spot

My problems:
1. The ship feels like it's peddle powered. I feel like the slowest ship in every match.

2. It's RARELY stays down long enough to reach anything I can shoot and when I do spot and close in the BB line behind uses my sighting to kill my target right as I come into range.

2a. Seriously, this idoit ship feels like the air tanks have holes in them. Why do other subs stay down 4x longer than I do?

3. In AAW my peddle powered sub turns too slowwwwwwww and has no rear torps. I've stopped trying to engage other subs.

4. If I stay on the surface about 50% of the time I am sunk or crippled with the 1st salvo aimed at me.

When you combine the lack of speed with lack of submersion time...it amounts to a very frustrating "why bother experience".

Any ideas how to fix this? What am I doing wrong?

Did a test.
Takes 2 minutes 45 seconds to get my air supply to max
Submerged the supply lasts 2 minutes.
On the surface I move at 20knots, or 22 on a burn.
Submerged  I move at 17knots...I think.  It's hard to read those numbers.

1) all SS1 in the game are slow
2) the sub dive time is different from each tier... so don't compare your ss1 to other sub at higher tier (e.g. comparing your vickers to I400 or any t4 or t5 subs)
4) SS1 can't hold 900 SD so expect to be sunk or crippled in 1shot compare to ss4-ss6 that have 900sd even a good shot from a bb5 or bb6 they are still green

level your sub on a yubari as aa or asw and wait till ss2 or ss3

I was hoping for another answer other than give up.

The biggest mistake seems to be the stat of your planesman.  Your sonar has better Pot than your Planesman which refills you air.  Priority should go to planesman.  Also if you haven't already remove recruits from your BO to save as much weight as possible.

Don't expect much from a tier 1 sub as phantom has pointed out.

Your playstyle in that ship should be defensive - helping to detect incoming enemy subs more than engaging them.

Your time to attack will be countering rushing ships at mid point so you have time to retreat.  If you also wait until the latter half of the game, you might be able to slip in undetected and catch enemy ships off guard.

Like with most tier 1 ships with low/basic crews, you have to be patient and pick your spots otherwise use a ECL or PCL to level the crew so you have a slight advantage.

No idea how to remove recruits to save weight or that I needed to.  I'll look that up.

My planesman being screwed up, yeah - I kind of guessed that later, but I was 30-something levels in.  I'm hoping that I didn't bork that beyond repair.  I figured that he was kinda average.  I'm guessing that I can't reset those to fix them.

I'll be in the SS2 in one level.  Just concerned that it doesn't getter better enough to matter.

You're still at such a low level, go redo the planesman.  Pot 15 (or elite if you have the $) or at least a 14.  If you have a planesman showing 13 right now, that means it was 11 to start.  That's suicide.

I believe there's a button under each sailor: RCT.  Click that and you can increase/decrease recruits.  You want to keep you recruits full for most sailors.  In the case of SS bo, it is okay to reduce the recruits to a bare minimum to save weight.

you might also want to add a couple of engies for your ss4-6(or 5.5)

would be easy if you gone bb first then sub 2nd but anyway since you started on the sub line just continue and don't give up just because your sub can't do anything yet

Thanks for bringing that up. I tell a lot of people that as well.  It's also very easy to level sub crews on other ships - in fact you could do parts of an entire sub crew on a conventional ship line.

On top of that, you learn more about the game in general as well as the different types of ships and nations you will face.  Knowing the potential capabilities of opposing ships helps so much and you just don't have the time or vision for that kind of learning in a SS - especially SS1.

So I think our final advice is, redo the planesman, add some engies and do that possibly on a new BO along the traditional gunship line.  It'll end up opening up several other gameplay options and at the very least you will improve a few things on your sub crew.

Lots of great advice here.  And wow, thanks for that.

I started over on the planesman.  I rolled up a 15po and he's level 32 now with +17 air supply.
I leveled up three BO's.  One is in the SS line.  The other is in the CV1 Hoshu, and my last one is in the Kuma Kai.  The Kuma Kai seems to be the best for leveling guys up for my SS and CV line.

The reason I gave up the gun ships is that I suck at manual aiming to the point where I'm NOT having fun.  And, everyone out there out ranges me.  I know it takes practice....but it's just not happening for me and I lost patience.

The SS2 is fun.  It's a lot speedier but I don't feel that it stays under any longer than the SS1.  Once I get my planesman up a bit more I'll try that again and see how it goes.
