Depends on your crew, personally i can easily run around and take a decent hit, was hit by a monty full shot once and survived. The ship is great at dodging and is quite quick too, i also have a full 120 crew to use so others with lower level crew may not enjoy it as much but as long as you have 900SD you should do fine. Very easy to get over 250K attack with the maryland if you play it right.
The maryland can take a solid hit for a US ship of it's size, it may not have the BEST DP around but it can take a good hit and dish out just as much of a hit in return.
