  • Iowa surprise

I was unhappily surprised with the upgrade from sodak to iowa. I found that the ship seems to be a "tweener". It doesn't quite have the range that I need to deal with bigger BB. At the same time, its slower, so I can't get into and out of a fight like I could before. My current setup is:

Iowa
3 16/50 Ns with light shells ( I started with  normal and switched hopping the range would be better; turned out to be about 1/4 of an inch)
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 39

Sodak
3 16/45 Ls with normal shells
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 47

Maryland
4 16/45 with normal shells
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 39

SO, the Iowa as I have it is giving me slightly more range than the Sodak, at the cost of a ton of speed, so as before I could pick out an isolated enemy, get into range, and then win a gunfight by getting more hits faster, now I'm taking a pounding getting into range. Or, I have similar speed to Maryland, but I've got a way bigger hitbox and  although I get the first shot off at a longer range, the maryland can really knock ships off fast with the extra 3 guns.

I have a few ideas to try, tell me what you think

1) Put on the L model. They are a lot heavier and my speed will drop down to something like 35. I just hang back and wait for the enemy to come to me. I much prefer to AA the scouts, move into the shadows and attack, but I guess I could do this.
2) Put on only the front two L turrets. My speed jumps into the 40s. I can get into range, shoot and get out. But I don't have a lot of broadside weight.
3) Put on the D model, hope my spead improves to low 40s and play like a sodak
4) Put on the sodak L guns and really get the speed up and play it exactly like a sodak.

Iowa definitely needs 3 guns... putting off AA seems the best way to go faster.

I feel sorry for people like you who don't really understand what they are talking about.

When you slingshot, you are normally are barely out of range. You turn your front into range quickly, fire the forward guns, then turn back, keeping the center of the ship just barely out of range, this turns the back of your ship into range, firing the rear guns, then straightening out, moving the entire ship out back of range. The distance from where the guns were fire is the same as if you fired in a straight line. You just move the guns in and out of range while keeping most of the ship out of the enemy ship's range. A very effective play style. Most people believe they gain range from doing this. You actually do not, its an fake optical illusion caused again, by moving in and out of range. Where people believe the gained range where actually they are firing the same distance from point A (Where the guns where fired) to point B (there the shells landed)

I've also played longer than you've probably know this game has existed. I've used slingshotting many times since I got to my first BBs about 5-6 years ago. I've used it in HA, GBs, Normal Rooms = BB5 Rooms, 1 v 1s, 2 v 2s, all welcomes. Besides, I normally don't run unless I'm completely blind. I prefer pushing other players into making mistakes. I normally just 1 or 2 shot smaller ships after warning them they are in range and they should move back. I normally go for the largest ship in the room, even if I know the player is better than me, I will try to stall them from raping my team. I play to win and sometimes help others along the way. A key way to understanding the "How did that L2 range me when I'm in my Kaiser" is understanding the basics of how firing and aiming works.

Back on topic. Its your choice on your ships. 42 without AA or 40 with AA are the speed caps. Though I will suggest you load all 3 main guns, Ls with at least 2 binds of LHE and 1 bind of AP per gun. Preferably 3 LHE and 1 bind AP

Remember, always go for 1 bind AP, Max remaining binds of the lightest HE (LHE or on some guns that only have HE) and always go for the correct L variant guns for the ship unless its a UK BB2 or BB3. The Nelson, KGV and POW have many gunsets that are very effective.

well if your speed its a problem you should get that 4th engy and put it at same lvl than the others

besides up until above lvl 90 for your supports you should stay in your Maryland... it have a brutal firepower (even better than Iowa) and a small hitbox. whey your supports get a decent level you can go to IOWA with a usable config.

remove all of your AA guns, you might stop gain some experts, but you really need those knots.. if you want to use your T mounts you should put some HH or PHH, they are lighter than AA guns and you will not loose more than 1 knot max.

I think your too used to the rush. Iowa is a tatically rushing boat, You HAVE to use its profile and turning force to your advantage. Also use its 45degree hangtime to catch chasing boats by major suprise. Best tips I can give that I haven't seen.

USN is all about the run and gun, you'll see that when you jump into the monty (witch is slower and much larger than the iowa). Pick when you rush past the line, wait for them to be blind. If you don't know if they're blind just move around your area and listen for enemy planes. When you have the chance wtfqqpwn them and keep moving your boat...like I said use the profile to your advantage.

#1 seems solid, and the best way to play the iowa

#2 is a noob setup which is ineffective

#3 is noob. The Iowa is a BB4, and should never be played as anything but such

#4 see #3

I do 100 k a winning game on average with it. Almost a block show while shooting. Range is fine, one shotting bb3's down is fine for me.
