im not sure how to explain it buy look to left corner in the box for armour in the torp right of it thares like usally triple digit number thats your SD its great to have more of it :P

you have a max. of 900 sd

example:


you have 900 sd and you got hit by shells doing 10.000 damage
you take 1000 damaage and burn the other 9000 slowly.

SD comes from your sailor, most supports give high contribution to SD then the BO,gunners,scout,aa gunners give small amount of SD

Having higher SD spreads the damage over time instead of taking it instantly.
Having SD and good repairers can make a BB VERY hard to sink.
Lets take a Kongo and a BW CV1 fresh from blitz.

The CV uses 6 bombers to deal about 13k damage to the kongo.
A kongo with bad repairers and low/no SD will be instantly crippled and dead in the water.

A kongo with 900 SD and good repairs will take 1300 damage initially and will slowly burn for 11700 damage.
HOWEVER while it burns the repairers do their job and counter the burning first by lowering the point the ship will burn (red arrow) and then reapir it as much as they can (blue arrow) repairers will never fix the ship up to mint shape but they still patch up most of the damage.

The kongo with good repairers will most likely be repaired and ready to absorb another wave of T1 bombers from the CV1 before they get a chance to finish it.

This is why bomber CVs in in GB should concentrate on BBs who are already in the yellow and burning or enemy CVs instead of mint BBs who will repair and be ready for another wave before you get a chance at finishing them off.
