we have a system with cooridinations like 45 125 at the pointer. ok, well..thats pretty accurate but overall it isnt fast to spot or tell a member where it is. cause u have to search for it...
a other idea would be a system that gives the minimap "touchable" qudrants.
for example in length u have the numbers 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and for the high u have A to J
looks like this:

with lines..of course. The X here shows the enemy. now u want to tell the team where a ship is, like a h44 or a submarine. u use the "ALT" button and be able to press one of the quaders inside the minimap with the left mouse button. in this case G-2. the team gets a chat-text "beware G-2" or something like this..and u can add a chat text like.."h44 there or enemy flagship".
that shortens the time, gives a relativity easy and accurate position. i know u would say: aaah help they will spam the chat with warnings. well..we have systems against that. and i am sure this is a usefull function.
btw it isnt a idea from me. i found that in a other game and there it works pretty well and usefull. and only rarely see spam there.

for the text "Enemy spotted in N-6" this could be replaced by some other text like "attention in cords N-6"
the grids should be more transparency and more thin. of course very accurate. this is only a example and done in 4 minutes to show you how i would like to see it. like LJ allready wrote and answered here..it helps teamplaying. a simple click is faster done. and a blinking spot/cord-quader in ur minimap gets ur attention faster then any macro-spam-text done by a player.
to avoid spam-clicking: everyplayer can click only a few times in row like 2 times in 30 seconds. the minimap-cords will blinking 4 or 5 times frequently in a second...5 sec .onds= 5 time blinking. picture:
