As all my "formula-posts" have been recently bumped, I was approached to put
them all into one post so it could be stikied... here it is.

These guides contain advanced information. If you are just starting to play the
game please go ahead and read Obst's guides on www.nf-guides.com. That
webpage gives you all the information you need to start with. If you have done that
and
are still curious about some details, go read ahead.

Since it has quite some information, I divided it into several parts, that are posted as
replies by myself.

probably will just be a misunderstanding and I don't want an obsolete discussion in
this post as it just blows it up and might scare ppl away.
I have not included all "proof" in this post - if you are looking for some numbers how
I came up with the formulas, feel free to look for my old posts from between 2005
and now,
and you will find more information in there.

Now I see you are right, Adalbert. Sorry for my low attention to detail. Thanks to
some predjudices I made, some things were confusing to me but now I got the
pieces I needed to fit it togerher. You have my recommandation.

For other confused people, I will state some of my former prejudices before I looked
at formulas that were wrong:

1: I tought basic sailor has displayed ability and the ability rating is percentual bonus
by vets/exps (so I was shocked by 0 starting ability and rather exponencial then
percentual True ablility increase).
2: When I first heard MaxCrew is important I looked at Ntot/Nmax part and said to
myself ... its always same whether big or smal Nmax if crew is full. (Truly doesn't
matter for recruits, but I missed that the crew growth means more experts/vets later
which is the only thing that matters).
3: I didn't paid enough attention to formulas to see that the "great" diferences of
parts of formulas were handeled in other parts and both give very similar numbers
(just few percent difference).

To explain the Ability Rate simply for people who dislike formulas:

Ability rate means percentage of true ability that "standard" crew full of experts
of same size would have.

well... what is your question, jan?
You read the text and what you wrote is correct. The Formula on Obst page is exactly the
same then the one I posted here - just another way of putting it. Mathematically
identical, just take a pen and paper and you can verify it quickly.
And of course crew growth is important - because you can have more vets and experts on
your sailor if his crew size is bigger -.-
Also true ability works for all abilities of course - just the effects are different, some
linear, some exponentiall, some with a hard cap, some with a level-dependent cap, and so on

Exactly. Also, high crew growth is good, because more crew means that you can have more
experts and vets (and so more true ability). In some cases (see the stuff with pilot
promotions), more crew beats more raw ability growth. In others (IJN DP gunners), more
raw ability growth is better than more crew growth (hence the classing late).

@SoloAD: Eh, post what you can anyway. It's just some equation or set of equations... (or
put a link to a site in the original Russian. Finding a translator shouldn't be too hard.)

I am a bit confused with various formulas of soldier true ability. I also see some
possible flaws. I would be very grateful if someone who knows abut the stuff
clarified my questions.



True Ability = (4Nv+Nex)*(Ntot/Nmax)*Disp. Ability
This would mean that having just recruits gives you 0 true ability and having 1
expert gives you displayed ability.
Unless its meant as Total Ability = True ability + Disp. Ability ; (meaning True ability is
just Exp,Vets bonus)
Not mention, that 1 Veteran and 1Expert + full recruits would give you 5*1*Disp
Ability, not just few % increase.

Ntot/Nmax = 1 if crew is full whether its large or small crew. (Perhaps only number of
exps and Vets matters).
Yet many people state that crew growth is crucial, perhaps using Obsts formula:

(Total Ability) = (Skill Percentage) * (Skill Value) * (Maximum CrewSize)
where Skill Percentage= Vet bonus + Exp bonus - Percent loss due to lack of recruits
(this formula however doesn't say how much bonus u get for N vets)

For ppl going CV route, this is very important. Some guides suggests not to promote
pilots because of decreased crew growth and True Ability seems to be extremely
important for aircraft.

I know this is mostly about Support and gunners, but I believe, the true ability
formula should be same for all sailors.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge, the guides mean lot to me as I am quite fresh
player.
